Pros
Salary and benefits are good
Cons
Senior management needs to change
Advice to Senior Management
Don't assume that current practices are acceptable because MIT's name is on it. Don't confuse "new" with "improved". They are not the same thing.
Pros
Always get supports from co-workers and supervisors. MIT provides a lot of resources for people to use, and people here are very friendly and helpful.
Cons
Sometimes this environment can be a little bit stressful. However, you learn a lot from your work and it feels fulfilled.
Pros
The best place to build your carrier for your future position
Cons
Too competitive and cheap environment
Pros
The people are amazing and incredibly innovative. Research is top notch and has real impacts on the world. There is also a great sense of community.
Cons
Can be quite stressful at times.
Pros
It is the best recognized institute in my field.
Cons
It is a competitive environment.
Advice to Senior Management
Just go on doing the good work that you are doing.
Have less administrative staff and bureaucracy.
Pros
Some of the best people in the world are here, and the most up to date technology is at your fingertips.
Cons
MIT is a sometimes dreary place where people seem to be just getting by emotionally, rather than thriving as you might expect given the resources available. Laughter and whimsy seem to be in short supply.
Advice to Senior Management
Not in a position to answer
Pros
No end of things to learn, seminars to attend, collaborations to be made. Flexible work schedule and good benefits. Energy of the campus and area. Students.
Cons
Low pay - typical academic rates. Advancement opportunities for staff are not frequent. Typical 10 year wait for review for advancement from research to principal staff.
Advice to Senior Management
Provide other (significant) reward structures besides advancement since everyone cannot be promoted to principal or senior staff positions. Provide wider range of salaries for positions.
Pros
1. Intellectual stimulation
2. Networking
3. Great community
Cons
1. There a not really promotion opportunities
Advice to Senior Management
I would like to see more management by objectives at all levels of the Institute. Employees sometimes are too relaxed and need more management motivation to perform.
Pros
Rigorously trained. Learn how to do research.
Cons
Competitive. High pressure. Too much workload.
Advice to Senior Management
Keep going. Stop the global expansion plan. It is damaging MIT's prestige.
Pros
The environment, the peers, the students are all quite wonderful. MIT is a world-leader in many ways, and being part of this university has been a great perk!
Cons
Management at MIT is not porous, meaning upward movement to Director-level (oversight of an office, for example) is notoriously difficult.
Advice to Senior Management
There are too few opportunities for upward or diagonally upward movement for staff. "Equity" in pay means that staff which work fewer hours are paid the same as staff that work more hours.
