Pros
MIT is really a community with all the conveniences you might expect in a small town right on campus - pharmacy, health center, entertainment, gym, places to eat. I worked with some phenomenal people who I liked and respected. Loved having access to lectures and presentations by well known science, technology, industry and art movers and shakers. I was lucky to work for one of the finest men I've ever known who treated staff and students with respect, compassion, and humor.
Cons
Most departments are run like little fiefdoms. It's mostly impossible to get promoted unless you leave for another department. Some department heads are head because they have achieved great success in their field but that doesn't mean they know how to run a department or manage people. I know it's a thankless job and it's difficult to find able administrators but a little more care about who is in this position would go a long way toward keeping ALL the staff happy.
Advice to Senior Management
The Institute isn't an especially supportive environment but it's especially unsupportive to women. I left because it was clear I had no place to grow and I didn't want to "wait" for a position to open up. Take the time to say something positive about your support staff. Loyalty goes both ways.
Pros
Many different departments to work in, and you can move up. Great staff and the students are very nice. Location is good, and the view of the CHarles River is beautiful.
Cons
You need a lot of experience in order to move up, so it takes awhile. The commute is terrible if you live out of the city.
Pros
Surrounded by the smartest people in the world
Cons
A lot of work, so it's hard to balance work with a social life
Advice to Senior Management
Greatest leaders out there
Pros
Flexibility, salary, opportunities to further education, great benefits. You can always find a department that fits your needs and personality.
Cons
Not the best in terms of structural organization and training. The "rules" or the "way things are done" frequently change.
Advice to Senior Management
Do what my boss does, give your people support and flexibility. Have a set training guide for specific job categories.
Pros
MIT is place full of world-class experts of all science and engineering fields. Everyday it offers seminars and lectures of frointier researches to students and general public. The campus is one-bridge distance to downtown Boston. And the campus is well equiped with all kinds of facilities you need, e.g. gym, medical center, and so on.
Cons
MIT is mainly a school of engineering and science. Although it does offer some humanity subjects, most of those won't be as deep or wide as those offered in other schools. But keep in mind, there are many good schools with strong humanity departments in MIT's neighborhood. Harvard, for example, is only two stops away from it. And students are allowed to transfer their credits between the two schools. Plus, resources, like libs, are accessible to MIT students, too.
Advice to Senior Management
MIT is doing a great job everyday of contributing to the progress of science and technology. And it will be good to update this progress with more demos and exhibitions on campus. For example, the MIT museum has kept the same demos for the last two years...
