Great company to work for as long as you dont care about promotions

Senior Software Engineer (Former Employee) McLean, VA

ProsCompensation is great and they are very flexible. They did a great job with promoting education to all of their employees and the management chain is very friendly.

ConsPromotion procedure and salary review procedure need a major over haul! You can not move up in the company without taking the management route

Advice to Senior ManagementChange your promotion procedures. Too much emphasis is placed on document writers and the technical people get left behind

MITRE is what you make of it

Lead Software Engineer (Current Employee) Bedford, MA

ProsYou can generally vary your work to maintain interest. Great benefits, time off and work/life balance. Really smart co-workers who are generally willing to help you learn.

ConsThe company is extremely risk adverse, to a fault. There is a quite a bit of bureaucracy. Older culture and workforce that can be tough at times for younger employees.

Advice to Senior ManagementFocus on actual performance. Don't take work just because it is what we've been doing for years. Take some risk. Doing the safe thing all of the time will make MITRE irrelevant.

It's a great place, but carreer advancement sucks

Senior Human Factors Engineer (Current Employee) McLean, VA

Prosgreat atmosphere, where people are really proud of the work, and take it very seriously. Lots of opportunities to get involved in diverse work programs, involving lots of domains.
You are constantly sourrounded by very smart people.

ConsAs mentioned in other posts, the promotion process is kind of a joke. They claim there is a technical track and a management track, but in reality the only way to advance is through the management track. Also, they sometimes fall too much in love with themselves, thinking that MITRE work is the only quality product out there

Advice to Senior ManagementOffer a more clear way for smart engineers to advance, and find ways to provide them with credit for the work they do.

    MITRE a place to die.

Senior Software Engineer (Current Employee) McLean, VA

ProsIf your not looking for advancement in your career and like giving Powerpoint presentations rather than building real systems this is the place for you. If you have retired from a real career and want a place to relax and offer suggestions to the government for how they should perform their job duties then this is the place for you. If you don't want to work hard and don't care about enhancing your career then you have come to the right place.

ConsIf your young and want to enhance your career this is not the place to work. MITRE is for the elderly who are just looking to coast through life.

Advice to Senior ManagementReward your technical people or they will leave.

Good work, mgmt needs work at times.

INFOSEC Engineer, Lead (Current Employee) McLean, VA

ProsThe diverse work program allows one to pick and choose interesting problems to work on. This is a very nice way to experience many types of problems.

ConsThe work can be a bit slow at times, and MITRE corporate culture at the main sign doesn't always appreciated offsite demands.

Advice to Senior ManagementManagement needs to be more credible when they are say they understand the various parts of staff's work. At times, it's almost like management acts liked tenured faculty that can't be bothered to work out issues.

Dual tech/management ladder now ends at Principal Engineer

Principal Engineer (Current Employee) Bedford, MA

ProsVery good benefits. If you are a graybeard, MITRE has an unusually large percentage of people who are subject matter experts with 25+ years of experience, so no age discrimination. They also have a lot of the more common less experienced younger people.

MITRE is always very highly rated by Fortune magazine and other ranking sources, including this web site.

ConsMITRE is a "Principal Engineer" company -- meaning that all the real work is done by people from entry level up to Principal Engineer. Once you reach Sr. Principal Engineer, you are expected to do a lot of management stuff, which is OK if you are into that sort of work.

MITRE is the world's most process-oriented company -- meaning that they do a huge amount of work developing processes of all kinds for the government. I suppose someone has to do it, but don't confuse that with real technical work.

If you want to go somewhere and be invisible and stay until you retire or die, that's easy at MITRE.

Advice to Senior ManagementMITRE's technical stature is not very high in the eyes of some other organizations -- DoD contractors especially. I found that out when I was looking at job opportunities to see what my market worth was. More than one candidate employer said that had hired a MITRE employee in the past ,and were disappointed because the employee was process-oriented and could not do actual technical work. So MITRE can be a very disadvantageous place to be from.

Dont know what this field is.

Info Systems Engineer (Current Employee) Suffolk, VA

ProsIt's a great place to work. Interesting work. Very different than other places. It takes a certain type of person to fit in.

ConsIt takes a certain type of person to fit in. If your a go getter, then this company may be good for you.

Advice to Senior ManagementGet your head out of the clouds. Focus on really making a difference and not writing reports only yeah yeah.

Lots of room for interesting work, but nearly impossible to advance.

Info Systems Engineer (Former Employee) McLean, VA

ProsLots of room for interesting work and good people.

ConsIt's nearly impossible to advance with the current management structure. It's best to leave and come back if you want a better positin.

Advice to Senior ManagementConsider a better review process.
