I have been working at MTD Products full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Projects move very fast, no chance of getting bored. You're allowed to take on as much responsibility as you can handle. You are moved around to different departments to support varied projects (good for career development).

    Cons

The fast pace creates some design mistakes that are painful to fix. Lately, some processes have been implemented to control this issue.

Current Employee - Temp  in  Willard, OH
Current Employee - Temp in Willard, OH

I have been working at MTD Products full-time for less than a year

    Pros

The people on the floor at Willard are amazing. They are what makes working there worthwhile and fun (most days). Tools and safety equipment are in abundance.

    Cons

Floor leadership lies to us about little things like why we work OT at the last minute.
It takes YEARS for most temps to get hired into the company.
Floor leadership targets temp workers for weeks, or longer, to see if they will walk out/quit.
Workers, both company and temp, get moved around too frequently. Learn a job, get exceptional production numbers after a time, then get moved to a new job.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

--Hire the temps that actually work and actually care that they have a job in your company. Do they show up during inclement weather when most of the company employees call off? Do they try their best on a daily basis?
--Stop moving workers who perform well at a particular task. If someone is good at assembly, leave them there. If someone is good at fabzone, leave them there. If someone is good at floating, let them float! Production and quality will go up consistently if workers are utilized where they perform the highest!

Former Employee - Worked In the Call Center  in  Valley City, OH
Former Employee - Worked In the Call Center in Valley City, OH

I worked at MTD Products full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Many of the employees are very nice
The benefits are out of this world
    Good vacation time
Employee organizations are available to join on campus

    Cons

Decisions cannot be made or stuck with. The call center is run by people from a manufacturing background and do not understand how a call center should or can work. They believe the all employees are interchangeable. The process is so complicated and inefficient that it's nearly impossible to understand what to do without several months of doing it. Moral plummets every summer when things get busy and the leaders fail to lead.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Look to your employees for the answers. Listen to them, do not assume you have the correct answers nor that everyone is happy.

Give reasons for your changes, help the employees understand why the change is good.

I have been working at MTD Products full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Small enough to know a lot of your co-workers (if you try), and large enough to make a visible impact to business strategies and processes. Overall a very comfortable environment and everyone is very friendly, for the most being. Most of the people I know that work there have a true desire to help the company succeed. A lot of folks that work there are older, and retiring but HR has started bringing in some new fresh young talent. Executives are very pro change, and are striving to keep the "family culture" alive while the old-timers retire and new blood takes over. If you introduce yourself to them they will always greet you in the hallways and refer to you by name.

Let's not forget the awesome cafeteria that's located on the 2nd floor of the building. BEST COFFEE EVER.

Gym is also available on campus

    Cons

Pay is not to industry standards
    Resources are often scarce
    Everyone prays for SNOW :(

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep things new and exciting... Change is good.

Current Employee - Production Machine Operator in Shelby, OH

I have been working at MTD Products full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

MTD is family orient as well as Christian based, which both are a good thing to have in todays times. The benefits are better than most companies.

    Cons

children, Shelby MTD is run by children. How can you have respect when you have group leaders that went to high school together and all party and post on Face Book. Most of the time these people were late to work on a daily basis. You cant expect employees to follow simple rules if group leaders cant adhere to them. Go figure they even got the bigger raises and none have higher than a high school education,

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management can be friendly for the most part but they too can be to tight and pass up people who could actually advance but don't fit in the right click.

Current Employee - IT Manager in Valley City, OH

I have been working at MTD Products full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Great and talented people in the middle and lower ranks.

    Cons

People's potential is limited by the inability of Senior Management to adhere to a strategy. Leadership can't break their own bad habits. CIO won't even use his own technology. In my time there, I never saw him articulate a clear vision of how technology can serve the company's objectives. Tons of in-fighting.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hire outside leadership to clean house of badly behaving executives.
