Pros
The people are nice, and many people have creative pursuits after work. Hours can be flexible. There are excellent benefits, including medical, dental, match on 401(k), and even a pension plan (not that many of the young employees will stick around long enough to take advantage of it).
Cons
Very large company with all the bureaucracy you'd expect. Sometimes hard to advance (though sometimes surprisingly easy). Work not necessarily "meaningful".
Pros
The offices are great, along with the location. Feels like a successful place to work at, regardless of the reality behind it at times. On a general basis everyone is friendly and gets along great. There's openness to new ideas and flexibility when working on projects outside the books. Non-existant dress code in certain departments, which makes everyone comfortable dressing however they feel like it.
Cons
Preposterous decision making by the higher ups who are out of touch with their audience. Tendency by the management to employ people who are buddies outside of work regardless of their skill or professionalism. Huge gap between the salaries of higher ups and the people at the bottom (there is no middle). When the mistakes of the higher ups turn into poor profit margins, it is the people at the bottom that get cut, while the said executives get rewarded with bigger and bigger bonuses and promotions.
Advice to Senior Management
Seriously, fire yourselves instead of everyone else. Its your fault things get the way they do sometimes, so own up to your mistakes.
Pros
Excellent benefits
Huge multinational company
A bit difficult to navigate corporate channels to find advancement
Excellent on site cafeteria if that helps anyone
Cons
Size can be daunting
A bit impersonal at times
Difficult to advance from within
Lots of turnover
Overall positive experience
Advice to Senior Management
No real words of wisdom since every department is different. Many people would prefer the networks to move in a different direction than they are now but the current agenda is working for the most part.
Pros
This is a fun and seemingly wonderful place to start a career, from interning up.
Cons
Once you settle in you'll realize the management and senior level management aren't always seeing eye to eye or coordinating between departments. Budgets are always getting cut and the employee turnover rate seems to get higher and higher.
Advice to Senior Management
Coordinate and get it together. Stop letting talent go.
Pros
Great opportunity to meet with creative people, young hip environment, intriguing assignments, respectable staff, fun and engaging atmosphere, nice place!
Cons
Small opportunities for skilled employees to advance
Advice to Senior Management
Help employees out with stronger advancement opportunities.
Pros
if you enjoy pop culture, it's a great place to be
Cons
overworked, underpaid, they think they're doing you a favor, very dependent on how much you like your co workers
Pros
Lax work environment. Great hours. Top 40 Talent. Constant change and life. Competitiveness. Subsidized lunch.
Cons
Bureaucracy. Lack of structure can be frustrating. Times square location annoying.
Advice to Senior Management
Continue to listen to ideas that can come from anywhere, not just a VP position.
Pros
If TV (not really music, ironically) is your thing then it doesn't really get much better than working for MTV. I worked through the ranks from PA to AP to Segment Producer and had a heck of time doing it. Fun environment, great people, exciting work....and if you're good at it and keep your producers happy there's plenty of room for growth.
Cons
Freelance...so you're working show to show. Not a huge problem if you're good at it and people like you but if either of those two things aren't the case...good luck!
Advice to Senior Management
n/a - good stuff all around.
Pros
Lots of hungry energetic employees out there trying to turn out the best possible product. There's a clear desire to be on the cutting edge.
Cons
Slow process time, great ideas become passe by the time the company has gone through enough red tape to create the product.
Pros
Excellent reference and great networking opportunities. Great exposure to industry trends, technologies and products. Fun and laid back work environment.
Cons
Projects and tasks were very low responsibility compared to other internships I have completed. They do not compensate for travel, which made interning difficult.
