Pros
MTV used to look good on your resume, but i think it's losing it's novelty in the industry
Cons
Very incompetent upper management. Art Director I worked for was a tyrant - a totally uninspiring leader and terrible communicator!
Advice to Senior Management
Listen to the creative people you have working for you, you're lucky to have them
Pros
Working at MTV looks great on your resume. The work is fairly easy and with the relaxed environment, it's like you're getting paid to hang out with your friends. You keep current with everything and there are plenty of opportunities to have after work interactions.
Cons
MTV is very top heavy and too many people get by doing nothing and running off of other people's work. Management is wholly incompetent and all about nepotism and HR doesn't do anything when you have departments complain. They don't really practice the work life balance they preach and expect you to do everything with the group after work. Benefits aren't really all that and there wasn't much of an advantage at working there because discounts were almost non existent and there were no media benefits.
Advice to Senior Management
Get your head out of your asses and cut out the info.patent people. You don't value employee loyalty and do nothing as far as employee satisfaction is concerned. There is too much waste and pay is crap.
Pros
- Looks great on a resume
- Get to work for well known networks
- People are friendly for the most part
Cons
MTV takes advantage of all the free labor they can get. It is super easy to get an intern position at MTVN, but once you graduate, forget about getting hired there. The useless "internship seminars" are just in place to make it seem like they are interested in watching you grow into a prospective MTV employee. It's all phony. Don't waste your time. Seek a better internship elsewhere where you actually have a chance of getting hired after graduation. I honestly think they post fake positions on the career site just to keep the HR recruiters busy. Ridiculous.
Pros
There is some prestige in saying that you work at MTV Networks
Cons
At my network, there is little room for advancement
Advice to Senior Management
Information sharing is paramount. Take the time to solicit ideas/concerns/suggestions from employees (the ones who are actually doing the work, not the executives). You might learn some things.
Pros
A good to have brand on your resume.
You'll learn how to swim with sharks and learn how not to get eaten.
Work with some of the smartest and creative individuals
Diversity and adversity at the workplace
Cons
Culturally chaotic ( good for creative people not for business people)
No work life balance
Benefits across the board horrendous
Work with alot of incompetent and distorted individuals
Bureaucratic and depending on offices (country) pretty top down
Advice to Senior Management
Clearer vision, respect, and nurture employees. The world doesn't revolve around the US.
Pros
There is no dress code. The people you work with. Getting to see and work for celebrities. Seeing your work on the air everyday.
Cons
The compensation is a little low compared to other companies. Advancement depends more largely upon time spent with the company, than with work ethic.
Advice to Senior Management
The upper tier management seems great, although I have had little interaction with them. The more middle management types, however, sometimes seem out of place.
Pros
People are really nice and they respect each other
Young crowd
Good name
Good location (times square)
You learn a lot
Flexible work hours
Cons
No compensation for interns. They should at least give free breakfast or lunch or travel compensation to their interns
Pros
The recognition is there, the connections are there, the opportunities are always changing.
Cons
It's a great internship/starter job or end job as in ending at a top position. The middle grown management is a bit hit and miss, organized chaos may be a good way to describe it.
Advice to Senior Management
Organize, be respectful, communicate and the work will be great while the employees are happy.
Pros
creative, fulfilling, diverse, fun, dynamic
Cons
salaries not competitive, long hours expected
Advice to Senior Management
better work/life balance
Pros
Fast paced environment that seamlessly blends corporate drives with creativity.
Cons
Very fast paced, can be chaotic at times. Also, mostly free lance positions.
Advice to Senior Management
None, everyone was very approachable and a great communicator.
