Pros
The talent within the company is quite impressive. MWH takes care of its people.
Cons
The company acts more like a collection of small offices, doesn't leverage its base of talent as well as it could. The "caring" culture also translates to reluctance to hold people accountable. Very few women or minorities in senior positions. As a result of these factors, the company doesn't measure up to its potential.
Advice to Senior Management
Hold people accountable for results at all levels.
Pros
Flexible work schedule good benefits
provides training
Cons
No communication between departments. They don't bid work its all from agreements
No paid overtime even though you work more than 40 a week
Pros
Good work/life balance
Fair compensation and benefits
Good opportunities
Cons
Glass ceiling
Constant reorganization
Needs more global standardization
Advice to Senior Management
Become more strict on adherence to global standards and processes... can no longer afford to let each region or operating company do whatever it wants
Pros
If you are an engineer, it is a good company to work for, if you are not, don't bother
Cons
As noted above, unless you are an engineer, there is no chance of ever going anywhere or doing anything for this company. The management is not good and lower level employees are treated very poorly. There is a reason there is such high turnover at this company.
Advice to Senior Management
Treat employees like they are an important part of making the company successful, not just executive management. REalize that without all the "little people" MWH would be nothing.
Pros
Some of the smartest people I have ever met work here.
Cons
Restructuring ever couple of years.
Don't let go of senior managers with poor track records.
Advice to Senior Management
Get your act together.
Pros
Nice work environment
Smart people
Managers are flexible
Cons
My position is empty, doesn't match my qualifications
There is little interdepartmental cooperation
Hours are watched
PTO is only 15 days, including sick
Advice to Senior Management
The company is too top heavy and stuffy. You should offer more flexibility in terms of dress, PTO, etc. You have people working for you who are not being fully utilized.
Pros
Good Knowledge sharing across the company
Reasonable benefits
Open and honest culture
Very little office politics
Working on one large programme therefore good job security
Cons
Limited career progression opportunities as low staff turnover
Little variety in the type of work
Loose identity working in clients office
Advice to Senior Management
In general keep doing what you are doing, especially with the communication. Look at diversifying the business client base in the UK
Pros
-Good base pay.
-Steady workload for good performers.
-Opportunity to work on international projects.
-Opportunity to work on multiple facets of a project (proposal to end), due to lack of staff.
Cons
-Technical staff are not rewarded on par with project managers of similar rank.
-There are just enough incompetent project managers and techinal leads to cause major headaches.
-Communication between project managers and staff is horrible.
-We fill a niche industry, with limited potential clients.
-Another year, another reorganization.
-I've been here for almost 10 years, and still no-one knows who MWH is. This makes it even harder to win work.
Advice to Senior Management
Leadership in this company is poor and the sharing of ideas/experience among the offices is non-existent. Every BU operates as it's own fiefdom, which eliminates the "right person, right job" mantra. MWH needs strong leadership to enact change and leverage the experience of a BU in one location to win/perform work in another.
Pros
Great people on the tools. Good training provided and excellent support to Graduates. Very forgiving of staff errors even when they cost the company a fortune. Excellent technical staff
Cons
Very poor communication throughout the organisation but particularly senior management. Company about to reorganise for the third year running yet management seem to be blinkered when it comes to the high overhead of the Operation: Account Managers, Programme Managers, Project Managers and Assistant Project Managers. Too many silos. In general Project Management is very poor.
Advice to Senior Management
Half the number of project managers. Become more focused about Clients rather than obsessing with internal process particularly around Project Management.
Pros
Good work - life balance
Steady flow of work
Good range of projects
Some opportunities for travel if you know who to talk to..
Cons
Management not interested in your personal development
Promotions are almost impossible to achieve – you have to be aggressive otherwise you go nowhere.
Pay is lower than competitors
Very poor review system (performance track - it is a complete waste of time)
Training is only given to certain employees, while other employees are often overlooked
No mentoring
Advice to Senior Management
Senior engineers need to get more involved with junior staff members.
Invest more in training.
Pay people what they are worth
