Former Employee - Project Manager in Hong Kong (Hong Kong)

    Pros

Knowledgable workforce. Various backgrounds, so always someone on hand to offer advice when requested.

    Cons

Always someone on hand to offer advice when not requested. Arrogance of senior staff.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Dont always focus on the big projects as staff need to gain experience on smaller projects too.

    Pros

The company is well-respected in the Construction industry and it is very profitable. Senior managers were approachable. Benefits were fair, although salary poor.

    Cons

Salaries are too low and below national average, despite the fact the head office is located in the City where salaries are traditionally higher. The company is very profitable but that's only because they like to cut costs and don't invest in their staff. I finally had to leave after two years without a pay rise, despite the fact that my appraisals were excellent and the company was making a billion turnover. I left for a similar job with a salary that is forty percent more than what I was making at Mace, which just goes to show you how low the salaries at Mace are. Consequently, the people who work at Mace are of a lower calibre, and not ambitious or bright enough to get high-flying jobs elsewhere.

Managers liked to micro-manage. They also encouraged competition between colleagues, which caused a lot of tension in our department.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Treat your employees with more respect. Stop micromanaging them as it makes for very unmotivated staff. Also, pay them a decent wage. Competition in the City is fierce and you're simply not attracting the best talent.

    Pros

Some of their flagship projects can be very interesting.
At the time of my employment they had a very good mentor scheme and graduate scheme. The support of training was second to none.

    Cons

I found I was involved in alot of company politics.

Former Employee - MEP Manager in Baku (Azerbaijan)

    Pros

Good size company, good exciting projects, salary always on time, reasonable bonus.

    Cons

Senior management in Baku haven't got a clue, lots of people being carried by the few good people, salaries are not based very well on grade and experience, management act like bullies and lying main contractors instead of the professional body they should be and looking after their clients interests.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Do not rest on your laurels....

Former Employee - Construction Manager in London, England (UK)

    Pros

I enjoyed good exposure to big projects and have had plenty of experience dealing with clients face to face and was fortunate enough to have some good discounts on a trip to the Bahamas once.

    Cons

There are some VERY poor company ethics (internal relationships), some of the worst company politics i have ever seen and to the point where i simply had to leave.
Rumours floating around that the board members do not get along and there seems to be a VERY top heavy business structure (outrageous salaries and to many EGO's).
Mace has just become too big too quickly and i cannot see this run of what is self described as "success" lasting too much longer.
They are also quickly becoming notorious within the industry as a company who do not treat their clients with the greatest of respect which is a shame seeing as the company is called MACE and at our company induction we where informed it stood for MANAGING AND CONSTRUCTION EXCELLENCE.

    What a joke.

The HR team proved irresponsible and useless until it comes to promoting its self.

Couldn't be happier to have left and can't wish them enough bad luck.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Leave. You have killed the business.
