    Pros

Very clever colleagues, great learning experience

    Cons

Very competitive culture with excessive focus on KPIs and cost cutting

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Emphasis on building a lean team and minimizing costs kills morale

    Pros

I have been working at Macquarie Group full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

    - A few nice employees to work alongside
    - Knowledge gained with the variety of processes in bettering the business is great
    - The name/brand Macquarie has created for itself; gives others a good impression for working here

    Cons

    - consultants, senior consultants, AD's, DD's ED's -they all think they are important, so be prepared to work over your means!
    - If you are not liked by the right people your hard efforts will not count, they will just let you go..
    - Expected to work long hours, but don't expect to be rewarded.
    - A lot of double handling, some processes and systems used are ridiculous
    - Expect to do silly requests and have large amount of work offloaded
    - No mentorship, no guidance when you initially start employment, very minimal training & be prepared to be snapped at if you as a question during your first months at Macquarie.
    - High Ego's and arrogant people, a lot of people earning good money walk with their nose up in the air.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    - Don't rate your staff,
    - focus on the little things as well as the big,
    - do not compare depending on their hierarchy; just like how you believe you have a place in this company and play a part in your role, others below you such as assistants also contibute and feel the same way
    - Get to know your new employees and make them feel welcome
    - understand that assistants too want to excel and joined the company for a reason other than work hard in managing your diaries.

I have been working at Macquarie Group as a contractor (less than an year)

    Pros

    Good, hard working people
    Free Toast!
    Nice offices and locations

    Cons

    Very long hours.
Lots of bureaucracy and politics. People are always pushed to do more even though they are already working harder than the majority of people in other organisations

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Make people work smarter, not longer. Reduce the excessive number of processes.

I have been working at Macquarie Group (more than an year)

    Pros

Fast, innovative, smart and driven people. A lot of energy and a great building to work in. Activity based working which is great for mingling or great for the days when you need to be focussed and in a quiet environment.

    Cons

Individual behaviour rewarded rather than team player. Banking type personalities are a little different but once you know how it all works. It's fine.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The managers I've crossed paths with in the bank have all been fantastic, smart, knowledgeable. Some can be tough but very fair. Most as you would hope for are people focussed, friendly and very driven!

I have been working at Macquarie Group full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Decent pay and bonus, good offices, good technology, good work life balance (for those who don't pretend), good location, interesting work

    Cons

Cut throat environment, extremely political, unless Associate Director and above, no real voice and ability to progress, small minded people and unless part of 'Management Team' no real opportunities, people with no management or even decent work skills get promoted if they suck up to the right people

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The whole performance management within Compliance is a joke!

I worked at Macquarie Group as a contractor (less than an year)

    Pros

Great people, comfortable work environment, you really feel like you work for a top notch company here. I worked here as a temp EA for 6 months and would have gladly stayed on longer.

    Cons

My department seemed pretty siloed amongst divisions. I wasn't around long enough to notice any major issues.

I have been working at Macquarie Group full-time

    Pros

    - strong presence in Australia
    - growing in international space
    - plenty of new projects and opportunities

    Cons

    - legacy applications still used for FX and Risk divisions
    - slow to adapt to newer tools
    - architecture board bureaucracy on technology usage

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    - Architecture board members have old school thinking and not talented enough to propose bright ideas to compete with other Investment banks.
    - need to provide training to improve staff who have been working at company for over 5 years.

    Pros

Well known brand, looks great on your CV.
You will probably fall in love with your next job, anywhere else

    Cons

Everyone here is in denial about work/life balance.
One week I pulled 86hours in office which was dead last in my team.
Hey, if work is your life go nuts

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Next time one of your analysts gets the job done in half the time and leaves at 7pm, promote him.

    Pros

Great company to work for if you are aggressive and are motivated to succeed by all means. Rewards can be generous.

    Cons

Macquarie management can be closed in and protective of territories. Promotion based on revenue generation and how well your manager likes you. If you don't fit in, you will be shipped out. Many are arrogant and it's a very aggressive environment.
