    Pros

Benefits, campus, staff and collegiate environment. Generous pay are all well received bonuses. Excellent offices flooded with natural light.

    Cons

Middle management often lack direction, and people management skills which leads to low staff morale and therefore lower productivity. There is also a bottleneck at the top regarding progression.

    Pros

Easy to get the job as there is no competitive process
    Good salary

    Cons

Not used to the communism working culture. It is the centralised operations. Accounting & Corporate governance department is mainly predominated the with communism party, althothgh they might not amitted it. Red dragon management style- inconsistent to each individual. Attract large number low quality and kiss up the boss people. No real productivity, but a lot of underground deals

I have been working at Macquarie University full-time (less than a year)

    Pros

Macquarie is fine on the whole. No major issues with students. Higher management is reasonably sane. Nice campus and environment. Work-life balance is fine for the type of work.
I've worked in six Australian universities - this is pretty much in the high middle.

    Cons

I've found that middle management (area convenors, heads of dept, etc.) are on the whole weak. As a rule they lack academic credibility, but that's minor compared to their inability to manage people. Procedures are often arbitrary and differ from month to month and department to department. Managers pick fights with the people under them, rather than engaging and cooperating with them; I wouldn't say I have seen out-and-out bullying but there's very little support and a lot of unnecessary hostility.
If there is a reason for this, other than that the uni can't identify/attract/keep good managers, it's that the emphasis on purely numerical assessment of students (enrolments, student assessments, exam results, etc.) has distorted people's way of thinking. It's common across the uni for lecturers to get involved in protracted discussions about tiny changes in final grades, which is all the more irritating when the same managers have spent no time at all during the semester paying any attention to the content of the course and the academic progress of the students.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The university needs more academic direction.
