Macquarie University 2008

Sydney (Australia)

I worked at Macquarie University part-time for more than a year

Prosgood opportunity to get involved in teaching and practice presentation skills that are very useful even as at today.

ConsNot really much of the downside.

Stuck in a time warp

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

I worked at Macquarie University full-time for more than a year

ProsRelaxed environment. People generally friendly and easy access to a leafy campus. Some staff genuinely aspire to improve the lot of staff and students and the status of the university.

ConsIn many respects this institution is stuck in a time warp. There is little recognition for the reality that the government is not going to simply fund low impact research forever.

Teaching at Macquarie and SIBT, would not do it again

Tutor, Part Time Lecturer (Former Employee)
Sydney (Australia)

I worked at Macquarie University part-time for more than 3 years

Pros- Quite high pay
- Made lots of friends
- Some subjects are very challenging

Cons- No career advancements, I've worked here for 3 years and had a $1 pay rise (per hour)
- So many unprofessionalism, hired a few unqualified people, favouritism
- Ridiculous rules like no water bottle in computer lab, no touching printer, and people have to stay in the exam room even after they finish (for some exam), will make you feel like working as a police rather than a teacher.
- Some international students don't speak good enough english. Makes it very hard to communicate. Especially first year students and SIBT students.

Advice to Senior Management- Listen to your employees, they are human too, they have families like you do. They want pay rise, they want job stability, they want to get paid when they're sick.

Interesting but unproductive

Research Scientist (Current Employee)
Sydney (Australia)

I have been working at Macquarie University as a contractor for more than 5 years

ProsI got to spend a lot time outdoors conducting fieldwork which was highly enjoyable. Got to spend days on boats sampling and see parts of NSW i never would have otherwise

ConsIn the 5 years i have worked here i have not had one promotion. There is very little room for promotion in my area of the industry.

Low standard and Poor management & leadership

Professor (Current Employee)
Sydney (Australia)

I have been working at Macquarie University full-time

Pros1. I got the job very easy 2. salary is same as other top university in Australia.

Cons1. low integrity culture and bad leadership 2. Too focus on high tuition fees. 3. it is a teaching university 3. a lot cheating and mis-management 4. Poor HR leadership and Employee Relationship management 5. unethical culture and it generally reflects the poor leadership 6. most of my colleges are mainly from Asian China and they don't even have qualifications to teach postgraduates courses.

Advice to Senior Management1. Don't focus on (high tuition) Asian/Chinese students and teaching. 2. The management should not hired their overseas students as the teaching /academic staff. 3. Leadership should focus on Australian value and high quality research 4. Remove and appoint new teaching and HR leaders

Great research environment and level

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at Macquarie University full-time

ProsThe medical faculty of Macquarie University focus on the advanced level of research in the field. Our group specialized in the research of hypertension-related diseases and my concentration is on the investigation by non-invasive measures in blood pressure and arterial stiffness and computer modeling.

ConsMore improvement should be done in the personnel management especially in multiculture.
