Pros
-they are always looking for new talent to meet and exceed performance standards for future opportunities and promotions
-never boring, always busy, and lots of customer and peer interactions
-do the job well, get lots of praise, and Macy's Money (an employee perk, to be used for purchases)
-team members are fun and friendly
Cons
-tiring work, you gotta do a lot within a day
-schedule is automated and supposed to take your preferences into account but never does
Pros
Decent pay compared to some other retailers
Fun co-workers!
Management was able to work around my schedule
Management wasn't always there breathing down your neck!
Management took the time to stop and thank you for doing a good job.
Nice discount!
Great hours
Cons
Rude customers. A lot of people expect you to hold their hand while they shop, and complain about things we can not control. Most people are nice, but you will run into plenty of miserable ones.
There are workers who are lazy and do not want to do their job, leaving you to do everything.
Macy's was very understaffed when I worked there and we got a lot of complaints from customers because of it. Some departments would have only 2 sales associates working. I was working recovery in the housewares department one day and not one single worker was around when customers needed to check out. I finally found two girls trying to hide while they stood around and talked.
There are lots of managers and all want to go over each others heads. I would get 3 managers all tell me to do something different and all would expect you to listen to them. I was assigned one manager, it would of been nice if they would of let him do his job. There were some managers who walked around and tried to tell other managers' workers what to do/try to steal them for their own department. It was super annoying.
If you get hired to do recovery, have fun because sales associates just stand around and pile up more work for you to do even when they're not doing anything. Also get ready for the ridiculous fitting rooms, rude customers who think they're better than you, and you'll end up cleaning up after the merchandisers who leave a giant mess behind because they don't believe in cleaning up after theirselves. You will also have to fill in for merchandisers occasionally.
Training is crappy, they throw you out to the sharks. Everything is trial and error.
Wearing all black really sucks too.
The job really isn't as bad as it sounds. I think recovery would make a great first job so you can get the feel of retail.
Advice to Senior Management
Work together instead of going behind each others backs to make decisions regarding employees. Also make sure everyone is doing their jobs, because some just want to walk around and collect a paycheck. Communication should be better. I had to call HR a few times to get info that should have already been passed on to me.
Pros
Very thorough training program and provided a great foundation to start any career in retail.
Gave you tough skin and taught you how to handle a competitive, cut throat environment.
A reputable company that looks great on any resume.
Cons
At any time there were hundreds of people in line to take your job, and you were treated as if you were dispensable.
There was a lack of respect in communication from the top down throughout a multitude of departments and levels.
Pros
If you like makeup, you get to be around it all day.
Cons
The pay is absolutely embarassing!
Advice to Senior Management
Pay cosmetics associates what they deserve!
Pros
There really are not any good reasons to work for Macy's central or macys in general they are not there for their employees.
Cons
They are more focused on themselves and do not care about your life and expect you to put the company first.
Advice to Senior Management
Focus on smaller stores not just the main ones.
Pros
Experience to work with and help some great individuals.
Cons
Very little opportunity for career advancement. Retail compensation not very good.
Advice to Senior Management
Increase the pay for associates and provide more opportunities for advancement in terms of training or career shadowing.
Pros
Flexible schedule. Cool people to work with. Extrememly laid back compared to other department stores
Cons
Communication between management sucks majorly. ,There is a point system thats associated with attendance. If you use 6 points they will FIRE you. It takes forever to move up, the pay is HORRIBLE, they will start you near minimum wage and aren't willing to negotiate, no matter what your previous experience is... Macy's will hire just about anybody to be their slave for $8 per hour.
Advice to Senior Management
You will continue to loose hard working people if you keep paying them minimum wage!
Pros
Perfect if you are enrolled in school.
Cons
You work all holidays and all weekends.
Advice to Senior Management
Listen to their feedback and their concerns. We are all different with different personalities that effect the way we are on the sales floor. Also, the new score card system is incredibly unfair . Certain ares have more traffic than others but we are still being compared against each other. You are making it very hard to be successful.
Pros
Great employee discount on all merchandise
Good Products
Good company rep
High turnover/ less competition
Not stressful
Professional dress policy
Cons
Sales strategy too pushy
Pushy with opening loyalty credits
Unreasonably high sales goals
Little training provided
Low pay
Little room for growth/promotion
Not enough communication of changes from managers to employees
Advice to Senior Management
There should be more focus on the progress of employees and to build up more training for new employees that are lacking in experience/training. Too much focus is put on building sales and opening credits through repetitive and aggressive sales strategy, and not only does that affect the customers in a negative way, but also the employees.
Pros
Being able to work and go to school. Thankful that I have a choice to work somewhere else later on.
Cons
Things happen in life that we cannnot control so to come up with losing points if you are sick or stranded on the freeway is not fair. Having to give 6 weeks notice in advance to take time off is not very thoughtful.
Advice to Senior Management
think of ways to make the atmosphere there less stressful for everyone, for eg do not force associates to stay after sceduled time to clean up. Train the management team on how to be more approachable and be more respectful.
