    Pros

Macy's has great benefits and a great, flexible schedule system. It's a huge company, so there is lots of room for advancement.

    Cons

If you want to advance in this company, you have to come up with a song and dance. It's not enough to do your job well. You have to make friends with upper management and play head games. There are too many people who you barely see who can stop your climb.

    Advice to Management

There needs to be more of a checks and balances system. Also, there needs to be consistent coaching all across the board.

  2. Job transfers are not as quick and timely as promised; Online personnel website, once you're hired, is not so hot.

    Pros

The Day-Day is enjoyable and easy to sell a widely shared and like-able brand that most people want to buy. Online personnel website (for communication, scheduling, payroll and benefits) is easily accessed off the job. Macy's management, in person, are generally accessible, fun and friendly to work with.

    Cons

Job applications or quick job transfers to other locations or departments, are not as timely as promised, routinely taking over 3-6 months. Seems out of step with today's changeful retail community. Online personnel website for timekeeping and attendance doesn't always accurately reflect the employees daily communication with management, ie, if you are asked to leave early (on slow days) but you receive a routine attendance demerit on your online profile that just won't go away (for leaving work without approval), or your self-selected schedule is suddenly changed online without notice, so you can't attend, or you're asked to sign up for a certain minimum # of hours/week but fewer hours are made available online so it appears you are unwilling to work. The employee is often left to chase down managers for approvals to correct inaccurate attendance, lunch break or time reports because the online system automatically issues demerits for absence or scheduling changes, making you look like a worse employee online than you are in person. Mostly, it's the online personnel site that causes the most problems for retail associates; Macy's people in person are generally friendly, easy and fun to work with.

    Advice to Management

You must be losing good people if the wait for approving a job transfer takes over 3 months. Macys In-Site website needs to get up to speed with managers weekly and daily follow-through with employees.

    Pros

If you work for a specific cosmetics vendor, you get gratis (free products) several times a year. Pay is competitive for a retail position Not a very difficult job You can set one or two days off during the week You don't have to deal with things like fitting rooms or folding clothing

    Cons

High level of competition between coworkers for sales (commission based department) Expectation of opening 2 credit cards/week, lots of pressure to do so Little training provided initially Must work weekends Must call customers to follow up & for special events; this can get uncomfortable depending on the line you work for Expectation of recruiting new customers from the sales floor Base salary is capped around $14/hr

    Advice to Management

Not bad for a first job

Former Employee - Seasonal Recovery Associate in Columbus, OH

    I worked at Macy's part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

The pay was good for what I was doing, and the supervisor was really casual and friendly. Even during the (stressful) holiday retail season, my supervisor and full-time colleagues never broke from a calm, friendly demeanor.

    Cons

One thing that kind of bugged me was that they seemed to severely overstaff, and so I was periodically asked to not come in for my shift. I'm glad they didn't have me come in and do nothing, but it was a little disappointing that I didn't get as many hours as I was told I would get in this job.

    Advice to Management

All in all, not too bad.

    Pros

It is a good experience gaining interpersonal skills. You get a 20% DISCOUNTS on store products with special macy's store employee credit card. You can CONVERSE in different languages depending on customers and MEET DIFFERENT PEOPLE - you can work in different areas of store like beachwear or shoes or men's or teen, people mantain somewhat of a professional appearance, AND GREAT music from the perfume dept's almost alwaysplaying!

    Cons

hectic, low pay, no one sticks around long....but this is expected for a first job actually...Personally, I think it's a very good maturing experience if you've never had a job - consider it during a summer in college. The only really annoying thing is some sales managers are always on you case about refolding what you just folded to make it the right way....tsao

    Advice to Management

provide more benefit and incentive to meet sales goals
