Pros
if you pay you're dues, you can advance within the company with a demonstrated ability to drive sales
Cons
no weekends, ridiculous and unnecessarily long hours, no time off during holidays. Six day work weeks. Terrible work-life balance. Senior management does not like feedback. Staff and jr managers are discouraged from giving ideas from improvement. Staff is not utilized to full potential. Creative and innovative solutions are not encouraged.
Pros
-Amazing flexibility with insite, especially being a college student whose schedule can sometimes change and be unpredictable.
-Never have had to stay longer than I should have, and I take my lunches when I should. Plus they follow California law so its great.
-Get paid weekly. Who doesn't like that?
Cons
Been working here since the middle of November so I think my time is coming to an end so saying cons isn't that hard:
-Supervisors were really nice but really pushed the idea of selling the credit cards to customers. I've only had two customers open one since I've started, and I don't think that looks to good to them.
-Most coworkers are really nice and helpful, especially since I'm a seasonal who has been floating everywhere. But there was one woman who I worked with in a department for a week who gave me a lot of crap in particular because I never had a chance to put clothes away that piled up during the one day sales. Maybe its because she is much older than me (I'm 22), but she felt the need to boss me around, despite only being a sales associate and not my boss. There was another person older than her who was in the same boat (much nicer to me) and she didn't get the same treatment.
-While I love the use of insite, I signed up for part time. Part time I don't think involves not working. I've gone a week and a half with no work and finding shifts to pick up can sometimes be downright difficult.
-Sales goals are incredibly high sometimes and can only be achieved by staying at the register all day sometimes. Which is hard to do when you are not allowed to stay at th register all the time.
-Never met the store manager. Is that odd?
Advice to Senior Management
Here's an interesting thought: how about making some employees only cashiers? That way customers can get serviced without having the need to talk to an employee on the register. And I wouldn't say make the sales goal disappear. But make it more possible to achieve. 3000 on a regular Monday is too high -_-
Pros
commission is 1% of your sales. It is nice that I'm in fine jewlery so that can be made easy. I don't have to worry about cleaning up messy dressing rooms or shoe racks. Less shop lifiting in my area since everything is behind glass counters.
Cons
catty and competivite coworkers
first day on the job was Black Friday at 5am to 3pm. Every morning and night fine jewlery sales associate have to count every single item in the counters and safe.
Advice to Senior Management
If there is going to be computer taining then maybe it can be done online at home. Have more on the job training before someones first day is on Black Friday.
Pros
20% Discount all the time + coupons if you're lucky
Energetic management
Most Macy's patrons are pleasant to work with
No schedule requests for part time, but online scheduling makes it beyond easy to work with your availability.
Cons
Training all on a computer, first few weeks will consist of requesting help from co-workers
Sales goals are sometimes unrealistic, many times because of glitches in the computer system
Lots of employees = Getting lost in the crowd... Difficult to stand out if your goal is to move up
Advice to Senior Management
Make sure new associates are kept up to date with how to keep up to date. It's impossible to be on top of everyone, but at least make sure everyone's aware where they can get important company info for themselves
Pros
I can choose my own schedule, work in different departments & learn about sales
Cons
the salary is not good
Advice to Senior Management
become more aware of theft within the store
Pros
It was great working there because you get to pick your own hours with availablility options and the new insite system. Everything is advanced with the insite system. You could advertise your shifts, pick up open shifts if you want more hours, request someone to pick up your shift and theyll accept or deny it. Also, you could view your clockings, view your payroll and print out any months payroll or print your schedule. All this can also be done in store on the registers which is also a plus! Decent AST (HR) staff and great 20% off associate discount. Sales are closely monitered as you do have a daily goal and a scorecard.
Cons
Too much favoritism. Promotions are not fair and based just on connections. Other associates always want to blame the (on-calls) on their mistakes when we know more than them as we work not only in one department, but all of them. Managers are also too pushy on getting credit apps. AKA "Loyalty" when you cant force customers to apply. I always exceeded my daily sales goal and got a lot of loyalty but was never asked for promotion. Instead, they promoted a lazy worker who never had loyalty and was really bad. Few or no raises if you don't request it yourself depending on your manager and department.
Advice to Senior Management
Stop having favoritism toward others, stop blaming on-calls for everything, and consider the ones who actually have a good scorecard for promotion...Not just newbies who know nothing!
Pros
There are definitely flexibility with the scheduling if you are a visual merchandiser at Macy's, but then again that also depends on who your boss is. I happen to have an amazing and extremely understanding boss. You also get to work independently and creatively.
Cons
The work is physically demanding while the pay is extremely low.
Advice to Senior Management
They need to listen and be more aware of their employees needs in terms of guidance on how to reach their goals. They also need to give more positive feedback and not always the negative ones.
Pros
Discounts
Teamwork
Nice Management
Flexible attire, as long as it's 90% black... (do not have uniforms)
Household Name
Cons
They do not like to hire full time and the scheduling is a disaster. They schedule people for 3 hours a day!
Pros
Macy's internship is a really good program. The pay is good, and it offers a great insight into what its like to work at Macy's. For what I saw, there was great-work life balance, and my co-workers were great.
Cons
Its not a very exciting place to work in design. For a design/fashion company, its very corporate. There wasn't much creativity or innovation involved with "designing" new products either. The entire assortment was basically determined by numbers, and all the new styles were knockoffs.
Discount was ok at 20%
Advice to Senior Management
From the private brand that I worked for, I definitely felt that the communication between and design/product & buyer needs to be improved. Macy's should also be more open to taking risks with new designs.
Pros
Alot of hours and good discount. Fun atmospere to work in. Close to home and always something to do so the hours go fast.
Cons
The employees were not all friendly. The managers barely gave promotions and rude at times. The pay was not that good
Advice to Senior Management
keep a smile on your face at all times not just when a customer is looking.
