Pros
The overall mood is satisfactory at best.
There is some pressure when it comes to opening loyalties and sales but I tend to not really worry about them excessively. If I get a loyalty, I get one. Same goes with sales if I meet my goal I meet it.
A majority of the co-workers are really nice and helpful.
The macy's money is a nice incentive for opening accounts but they are thinking way to small. Other larger incentives would be a nice plus.
The employee discount is nice besides having to use a Macy's prepay card or credit card to get it.
The discount that I receive for my phone company is also a great plus.
Picking up your own shifts is decent but if you forget then you will lose out on hours.
The manager's tend to leave the upstairs departments alone.
Cons
The macy's lifers (those that have been there for quite some time) are a little hostile and territorial.
The starting pay isn't minimum wage but they should definitely adjust for the amount of responsibilities.
A smaller store does not get as much business as bigger store.
When business slows down it is a down right awful place to be. Time drags on forever.
Tasks that you are often asked to do are sometimes remedial and a complete waste of time.
They push loyalties when a vast majority of customers are returning customers.
Sales are more important than customer service.
I cannot tidy a department that is already tidy even if business is slow.
Advice to Senior Management
Get to actually know your employees.
Walk in an associates shoes for a while. Meaning management should have days where they have to open loyalties.
Do not degrade or talk in a degrading manner to associates because of title, that doesn't make you a manager it makes you harsh.
Pros
Established corporate company with opportunity to get retail experience. Great discounts for employees on purchases. Nice diverse co-workers, extremely capable people are hired.
Cons
Pay rate very low. After commuting expenses, could get more experience volunteering at a non-profit!
Low pay makes it hard to stay. Since turn-over is inevitable, there is always a steady supply of first-timers.
Advice to Senior Management
If experienced capable people stayed and received higher income, there would be less demand on the "supervisor" or "manager" who was not easily found, and the customers hated the wait.
Pros
The brand name, "Macys". Great discounts, great prices
Cons
Upper management cannot be trusted. Your only as good as your last success. They don't like dedication or longevity. It is just a numbers game with this company
Advice to Senior Management
Stop expecting people to kiss your butt in order to get recognized
Pros
20% discount, good coworkers, beautiful area
Cons
Minimal pay, disgruntled associates, rude customers
Advice to Senior Management
Earn an education
Pros
- great people and collaborative team nature
- giant powerhouse retailer
- focused on development of brand and culture
- great learnings from multiple roles
Cons
At the time I was with the company there were several internal reorganizations which impacted my experience. It was a hectic time and very unorganized as teams dissolved and regrouped. Many roles were unclear and the shift within the company did not foster much goodwill.
Advice to Senior Management
Offer better training within business practices, i.e. marketing training forum, merchant training forum. Many employees are frustrated with the amount of paperwork and red tape it takes to get things done. Other retailers are much quicker with thier go to market advertising strategy.
Pros
The discounts are nice. Sometimes employees are able to catch really cheap deals. I got eleven pairs of heels for under 70 bucks.
Cons
No one tries to help you advance. They actually try to keep you from advancing. Pay and benefits are constantly getting cut.
Advice to Senior Management
Keep your employees happy and you will be much more successful. If we don't do our jobs as a response to how we're treated, then your company loses business.
Pros
Setting your own goals and achieving them will bring you opportunities. You must be a self starter and not rely on anyone else.
Cons
Salary is not competitive with other companies. Too much to do and not enough people to get the job done.
Advice to Senior Management
Lead by EXAMPLE. I saw too many colleagues pointing their finger and not enough taking action.
Pros
Beautiful store, part-time hours are great, Macy's is respected in the community making it a pleasure to tell people where you work, seems like they are fair in regards to policy, professional environment and the hiring of over age "40" and above is impressive in my opinion.
Cons
Learning the ropes can be quite challenging when the store and everyone is busy, there is lot's and I mean lot's to learn and know. Errors are basicly unacceptable( as they should be). These 2 issues combined can lead to anxiety and anxiety can lead to errors. The payscale is a major downside on any level but more-so when you're surronded with enticing apparel, fragrance, cosmetics and sales! I'm part-time--would not want full time here too long of a day 9 hours. Should not be forced to take hour lunch/dinner - should be able to leave work after 8 hours again personally speaking. Also, there should be much more positive feedback in regards to what you did right during the day, instead of only hearing about what you did wrong. This one suggestion would make a big difference to associates for sure and I do not see it enough at all.
Advice to Senior Management
Extend Positive Associate feedback on a daily basis along with correctional feedback as needed. Managers need to make sure everyone's on the same page in regards to guidelines for the day-with each other. Above all share as much information and knowledge as possible with associates, the smallest, simplest amount of extra information and knowlege about the store for the day would make a big difference leading to less wasted time for questions, etc. leading to a more satisfied customer and a proud associate. The Magic of Macy's, right?!
Pros
Employee discount is very generous
Cons
Long hours and standing on feet
Advice to Senior Management
more feedback to employees
Pros
The job is indoors and is mostly clean.
Cons
An associate must stand for long periods of time and be willing to put extra pressure on customers to buy more goods and services.
Advice to Senior Management
Turn the heat down, literally.
