Advice to Senior Management
Appreciate your staff BEFORE they leave
Pros
My manager and Team Lead were very understanding of my commitment to my college education and understood that, for me, it came first. They gave feedback and suggestions on my job performance regularly, though it was unofficial (not through performance appraisals). I liked that because it helped me to improve where I was lacking. I worked in the early mornings at 6a.m. which means I worked with serious people which was nice because I didn't have to deal with negative types of people. My immediate manager often recognized my teams' efforts by giving small gifts of appreciation. Very nice people!!
Cons
Waking up to be at work as early as 4a.m (for inventory) but usually work started at 5a.m or 6a.m. There was a lack of hours to distribute to employees. Didn't receive "Macy's Money" often as sales associates because the company didn't consider our team to contribute directly to sales but my manager was able to obtain some when the store met their sales goals.
Pros
Extra 10-20 % OFF Associate discount when a Macy's card is used to purchase products. That's about the only pro if you have the means and are able to spend some money.
Cons
Associates don't have respect for each other and are mainly focused on selling at any cost to reach their daily or weekly goals to try to earn some miserable commission, if they ever get the chance to make some. High level management seems to know what they're doing, but just don't rely on the right people to carry on and execute properly. The sales managers are constantly pushing for credit accounts and thanks4sharing, mainly because they get bonuses for these account openings. In return, you get what they call Macy's money, which in fact it's nothing else but a miserable discount coupon that you could only use when you purchase items in the store. When hired, they tell you anyone can easily make 10/hr with commission. It happens to be a big lie. Most new hires won't ever pass making the $7.31/hr base salary. Overall, I would describe working at Macy's as one of the worst experience I ever had in my life. If you're hunting for a job and have a few other choices, leave this one as your very last option on your list!
Advice to Senior Management
Managers - Please be and assure everyone else is on the same page as you have managers walking thru the floors and each one of them would tell you something different to do.
Revise your paying system. It's truly not working! Create a collaborative environment among associates instead of a competitive one. How about breaking it up in area teams and pay by group commission instead? You figure it out.....But your actual system doesn't work at all. Believe it or not, you probably have 90% or more of your current employees talking bad about the company as I'm writing this feedback right at this moment. It's something to think about!
Pros
Flexible hours when one is only a part-time employee
Cons
no benefits at all, no raises, no opportunity to move up into a higher position....it's okay for a student but I can't believe there are people that actually support a family with their hourly wage at Macy's.
Advice to Senior Management
.............
Pros
development, lack of appreciation. recognition
Cons
raises aren't based on actual performance but rather other standards
Advice to Senior Management
develop and support talent a lot more
Pros
you learn visual standards , given big responsibilities, Knowing your DM's by name and seeing them often, Working in one of the most challenging stores in the Mid-Atlantic region , Working in an A/B door (merchandise wise)
Cons
No room for advancement , no respect giving from the visual manager, Being singled out when things aren't going the "right way" , Rude personal stabs
Advice to Senior Management
Go in with tough skin and only stay for the max of 2 years. the managers are there to dictate and nothing else having personal relationships is out, the organization and communication in that store is extremely horrible, the turnover rate is very high
Pros
- working with different kinds of people
- the benefits are okay
- the job keeps you busy
- good for gaining experience in customer service
Cons
- management doesn't work with you on needing personal time off
- management can be unfair in grading your performance
- favoritism
- you're expected to make a sales goal, and to open a certain number of credit accounts, even when there aren't any customers shopping in the store
- at my store, we were kept at work during blizzards when the mall closed, and management tried to keep us in the building when there was an electrical fire... until the firemen forced us to leave
Advice to Senior Management
A happy employee is a good employee. The more you put pressure on us to do the impossible, the less happy we're going to be. This is why there's such a high turnover rate. If you expect us to do our job and do it well, please treat us like human beings.
Pros
They will hire anyone. I really mean anyone whether you speak great English or very little. Also you get a discount on clothes, a small one.
Cons
The pay is not great and there is no room to really grow unless you stay for more then a decade and even at that rate its not a guarantee.
Advice to Senior Management
Implement a system that includes base plus commission much like Bloomingdale. Also they should offer a way to grow in the company.
Pros
Great employee discounts. fun coworkers
Cons
They are not very caring about your needs or desires. They will often refuse time off or try to make you feel bad for taking the time you need.
Advice to Senior Management
When a good employee wants to move up recognize this fact and promote them.
