Pros
Almost everything is straight forward and clear.
Cons
Honestly my only problem is standing all the working time which is normal for all retail jobs in US but it comes very weird for me as a foreigner.
Advice to Senior Management
Please! more under 6 hours shift to pick. I cannot stand over 6 hours :)
Pros
I loved the fact I was able to meet new people. Great place to learn how to sell. Also they give you incentive to sell and open cards by providing "macy's money" to pay up to half the price of a product you'd like to buy there.
Cons
I understand customer satisfaction is important, but sometimes I felt that customers that wanted to take advantage of associates and treat them poorly were rewarded with discounts and other things. I remember being scolded for not allowing a customer to treat me rudely, even though I maintained respect for the customer, I still didn't allow them to walk all over me, and had to hear it from a higher up.
Advice to Senior Management
I think it's just as important to have internal customer service as well as external customer service. When you have happy sales associates, you get more sales, customers are treated better, and productivity rises. When sales associates are ignored, they tend to be more negative to customers, care less about their jobs, and it will show in the numbers.
Pros
Flexible hours, flexible days, great flexibility for someone who is a student in college or university, option to work around the hours and to negotiate particular work hours.
Cons
For someone who hasn't had work in a long time or it's someone's first job, it's perfectly fine, duties not so overwhelming. However as time progresses one may realize that there are other options that provide better compensations to your labor not to mention benefits if you are fortunate enough to land a better job with benefits and better pay and steady hours. In the meantime it is a job and a low paying job with lots of duties for just one person is better than no job at all..
Advice to Senior Management
Regular associates whether it be support or sales are not machines nor octupuses with eight limbs to do such unreasonable duties in such little time. Even though it may be redundant, be aware that we are all human beings that get tired whether it be that your wear a white name tag or a red name tag and that those who designate the labor hours are probably those who sit on a desk all day with a computer and has not worked a single day of his or her life doing such duties that regular support or sales associates do. keep those things in mind!!!
Pros
I needed part time work and the hours were flexible
Cons
long hours during peak sales times
Pros
Pretty and fancy environment, opportunity of building relationships with customers, very dynamic job.
Cons
Unhealthy competition among coworkers with no control. Managers only write warnings but did not take any action to correct bad behaviors. Salary was very unfair. I worked the first year as a sales associate and the second I was promoted to the Counter Manager position with the same base salary and it stayed the same until this year, that was my third one working with the same salary with a lot of responsibilities over my shoulders.
I resigned and then, a new counter manager (with no experience) was hired with double base salary. Not fair at all !!
Advice to Senior Management
Professionalism is lacking.
Pros
Pretty and Fancy environment, good relationships with customers.
Cons
Schedules are unbalanced and salaries depend on your "friendship" with the store manager, not on your performance. After working for 3 years, did not get a better salary but got a lot of more responsibilities. Only store manager's "friends" got fair salaries.
Advice to Senior Management
Need more professional criteria
Pros
The discount, usually 20 %, but not on all items, on some items like cosmetics,it's less
Cons
Nasty coworkers, there's only a few nice people, everyone seems to be a backstabber, management doesn't care. There's many other places to work or jobs where you don't have to work with so many mean people with bad attitudes.
Advice to Senior Management
Hire better managers, make sure they only hire nice people with good attitudes. There are many nice people out there looking for jobs
Pros
Good place to work while still in college! The management team was overall very nice and respected that I was a student.
Cons
Sometimes, the store would be very disorganized, and management would be hectic. Overall, it was a great sales job while I was in college.
Advice to Senior Management
Management needs to handle their employees better and learn how to deal with stressful situations in a more positive manner.
Pros
Having a discount on discounted clothes is nice, hours are very flexible.
Cons
pay is a joke - really hard to have a good paycheck when u get 4-5% off clother that are constantly on clearance ( and most people that shop at macys are looking for clearance). pushing rip-off credit cards makes u look like a jerk. Managers are very unprofessional and barely have ANY degree, i've seen it all here.
Magic of Macy's - means - do more for less. They laid off a whole division and gave their job to sales associates (make reports on customer's needs and wishes so that they know what clothes to bring to the store).
Area management is totally retarded - u can have up to 8 people at one register while the other area has only one person for 3 registers.
And did i mention that u have to work for free after the store closes? Yep. U only get paid commission (of what u sold) and that half an hour that u have to stay afterhours noone gonna reimburse ( and that comes up to about 3-4 hours a week u stay there at ur own expense). and whats even better that are always tring to make u stay even longer then u are scheduled.... FOR FREE XD
and by the way most managers look like alcoholics and anti-depressant junkies... but i guess working at macy's made them look like that
Advice to Senior Management
why dont u try to raise the commision rate? i mean seriously when nordstrom gives 9% - macy's 4% sound kinda terriBAD
Pros
Nice employees and customers, good benefits. There is a very high standart to work with Macy's and if some of you like to be a people person and workng in retail, this career choice is the one for you.
Cons
Alot of dress for low pay. We have to dress vey nicely for such a low pay some of us are working at 8.00 an hour and have spent more money on clote that what we have actualy earned.
Advice to Senior Management
Be nicer to your employees since there HARD work pay for your BMW's. We try our best to please our customers and our own managers for such a LOW treatment. And what kind of commission is 1% in fine jewlery. People in other department sell even less and get more that us, and we sell the most expensive things.
