Macy's prepares you to understand the ins and outs of being a sales associate. Definitely work here if given a chance.

Sales Associate (Former Employee)
Las Vegas, NV

I worked at Macy's full-time for more than a year

ProsMet awesome people, got to really bond with the customer, took time learning the inventory. Had the opportunity to grow in the company had I stayed longer, but left due to being a student.

ConsAs one of the youngest associates at the time, I had to do a lot of work that was not in my job description which hurt reaching my sales goal on certain days.

Advice to Senior ManagementDo not take advantage of the younger staff.

NOT recommend

Sales Associate (Former Employee)
Las Vegas, NV

I worked at Macy's part-time for less than a year

ProsFriendly management, Recognition for high sales, Consistently happy demeanor of management. Hardworking general store manager and some awesome department managers. Friendly HR.
Christmas season in a commission sales position could be lucrative.

ConsSome of management (like my direct manager) played favorites. I once asked for a Saturday off 2 months in advance after being consistently high ranking in sales and was denied because a coworker in my department asked for the same day 4 days in advance. Also once asked for two days off to visit a dieing family member out of state and was denied.
Willingness to evenly distribute decent hours was minimal. One of my coworkers came to work obviously stoned almost every shift but was never spoken to by management about it.

Advice to Senior ManagementFix the above.

Perfect as a first job.

Sales Associate (Former Employee)
Las Vegas, NV

I worked at Macy's part-time for less than a year

Pros- Scheduling is perfect and super easy to maintain
- Fast-paced enviornment, which i like better than having too much down time
- Co-workers were very easy to get along with
-Got enough praise when necessary

Cons-Some of the managers were uncomfortably rude. Would sometimes talk down to me as if i were a kid.
-The pay was minimum wage
-Wasn't talked to often on how i could improve my job
-No signs of progressing of wanting to develop more into the company

Advice to Senior ManagementJust make sure you're treating the regular associates with a little more respect. You might be at a higher position and feel a bit more powerful, but if you approach us with respect and kindness it would show through how good a job we do and how happy and content we are at work.

I have been working at Macy's part-time for less than a year

ProsThe employee discount. The people are great. I love the clothes. The work is fun and we communicate well.

ConsThere are no areas of pride and you dont own your department anymore. The new schedualing system is terrible. We dont have a personal relationship with managment anymore.

Advice to Senior ManagementBring back the areas of pride and give associates a LIVEABLE wage.

Poor hours, poor opportunities for advancement, and poor benefits at Macy's.

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)
Las Vegas, NV

I worked at Macy's part-time for more than a year

ProsMacy's is a charitable company, which is something I can certainly admire. Also, managers tend to be more laid back, and I found the managers were less likely to micromanage their employees than any other company I've ever worked for.

ConsThe hours are very poor for most employees. There's a lot of on-call employees who are lucky to get any hours at all, and even as a part-time manager I struggled to get hours. I got as little as 14 hours a week... as a manager! Macy's also doesn't offer insurance to it's on-call and part-time employees, which make up the majority of their workforce. Additionally, opportunities for growth and advancement are poor.

Advice to Senior ManagementThe on-call hours don't work for most employees. People only take those on-call jobs because it's the best they can hope for in our hopeless economy. But it sucks when managers know they have good employees, and yet can't offer them the hours they need to survive and pay their bills. I was a top performer at Macy's but I never felt like I was cared for. I want to feel like I'm important as a person, including who I am outside of work. I didn't feel that way at Macy's, and therefore, you lost me to one of your competitors. Macy's needs to spend more time treating their employees right and gaining their loyalty.
