Pros
Macy's has great benefits for it's employees and their families.
Cons
Intially the job is only seasonal.
Advice to Senior Management
Great Employees
Pros
The discount at Macy's and Bloomingdales is nice as well as being around fashion.
Cons
Hours, customers, management, pay, dresscode, being at a large corporation
Pros
Fellow associates, fairly steady schedule.
Cons
Poverty wages; I worked full time and had to go on public assistance, and couldn't have even afforded the terrible heath care package had I wanted it. Associates get bullied by management, as per scorecard results, then management wonders why they have such a high turnover. Unless doing well on the scorecard, which is strictly sales/credit based, there is no recognition for hard work.
Advice to Senior Management
You get what you pay for. Macy's is the micro, in the macro of our country's economy. If you want to see why our country is failing, both socially and economically, just look at Macy's business structure.
Pros
Working there gave me someplace to go.
Some very nice coworkers.
Prompt paychecks.
Leaning the ins and outs of retail.
Cons
Very dirty bathrooms for customers and associates.
Poor communication from management.
Terrible pay (almost indentured servitude).
My feet really hurt for the first week.
Overworked floor managers.
Advice to Senior Management
Please clean up the facility. Have materials available at the wrap stands on a consistent basis. I thought I would enjoy working at Macy's more than I have. The store is in poor condition overall and the cleaning seems very haphazard. The bathrooms often lacked toilet paper, soap, towels, and tissues. Often heard customers complaining when I was in there.
Pros
The people and the culture were a plus; also the benefits were decent
Cons
The political aspect and 'red tape' involved with being part of a large organization....took forever to get certain things done, including major changes & promotions.
Advice to Senior Management
Listen to your employees, you are paying them to be the expert in their area...so take advantage of that knowledge. Also, focus less on the age or # of years of experience an Employee has and more on their competencies, skill sets, and ability to do a job when determining who to hire and who to promote
Pros
My Managers were always flexible with my availability, and my co-workers were great people that always were there to help. My direct manager always provided positive feedback.
Cons
Like any Sales Associate job - pay is low and working during the holiday season is exhausting. People are always complaining about the crappy pay at retail jobs, and the long hours, and managers getting on you about credit - that just means you need to get out of retail because the majority of chain stores are going to be that way.
Advice to Senior Management
try to stay positive
Pros
Sales and and management experience.
Cons
brutal work life balance. Horribly inefficient systems.
Advice to Senior Management
People matter. Not cogs. Treating people badly is the reason why people leave and why they stop shopping and why they won't ever come back.
Pros
It is a fun place to work. Compension for commission works is better than most. The people are friendly.
Cons
Not enough training for new employees. Expected to work very hard for your money. When things get busy as they often due in retail around the holiday's their was little help when you need it.
Advice to Senior Management
I would let them know that it is important to make sure that everyone is on the same page.
Pros
The work life balance is great. I often times came in to the office around 8:30am in the morning and left at 5pm so the hours were more than reasonable. I very much so enjoyed working with my peers and loved interacting in the market place with so many vendors and partners. Minneapolis is a great city as well so this made the job more exciting.
Cons
The compensation is poor and not competitive. Macy's needs to really decide who they are as a company. The senior leadership was extremely dishonest with many employees who have been layed-off as they did not want to communicate to their employees about how the organizational structure would change.
Advice to Senior Management
Communicate openly and honestly with employees and changes. Create a vision that will ensure the company's legacy not just for the short-term but long-term - and actually carry it out. Get competitive wages to attact more talented executives.
Pros
Great experience and knowledge. Great leadership team.
Cons
Too big of a company, lots of custumer issues to deal with on a daily basis.
Advice to Senior Management
They do a great job and are one of the best retail management team out there.
