Merchandising is not as easy as it looks

Current Employee - Support Associate in Flint, MI

I have been working at Macy's

    Pros

Management regularly recognizes employees in various ways for their hard work. This can be a fun place to work--there is always some kind of fun activity going on, and food is set out on a regular basis for holidays, during times where we are working unusual hours, or just as a a reward for employee recognition.
Work-life balance is fair for support staff in general, however the early morning hour starting times can vary and that can be hard for some who are not morning people or who have other obligations that may keep them up later at night.

    Cons

The hours for support team members can fluctuate tremendously, especially for part-time workers and especially after the peak holiday season. It's hard to plan your weeks ahead of time as support, because you are scheduled the Friday before your work week starts on Sunday. Also, as merchandising support your hours are effected by how much is being received on the weekly trucks. So your hours can sometimes change during the week if a truck is cancelled or there is more to process from the truck than was planned for.
The actual job of merchandising is pretty easy to do, but it can be tedious and sometimes stressful when there is a lot of merchandise to process in a short amount of time. Merchandising correctly in accordance with the company's constantly updated guidelines can be tough and sometime if you need guidance it seems that some of the department managers and managers get irritated with you if you have to ask questions. They like it if you can figure out the right solution on your own by referring to the guidelines. Some of the support managers and department managers tend to talk down to employees and talk them with a little disrespect when they feel they can't follow or understand the company's guidelines.
I think the minimum wage pay is inadequate for the quality and amount of work you are expected to do as a merchandiser.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Make sure you and your support department managers are sensitive to people who are hard workers, but need a little extra help with comprehension when it comes to understanding the merchandising guidelines. Understand that the guidelines sometimes have to be interpreted for the space that you have and that your interpretation will often be different someone else.

As for scheduling, some people are able (and willing) to work a schedule where hours can increase or decrease without notice but don't expect all of your employees to be able to accommodate that type of schedule.
