Pros
1. Decent pay/ benefits compared to similar retailers, PAID WEEKLY
2. Employee discount of 20%, increased once a month for 'Employee Appreciation'
3. SOME co-workers and managers are pleasant, helpful and friendly
4. You'll be the first to see all of the latest styles
5. Fun in-store events (fashion shows, VIP shopping events, celebrity make-up artists, etc.)
Cons
1. Sales goals are often unrealistic. Employee is penalized when quota isn't met.
2. Must open at least 4 credit cards each week. Express Credit quota doesn't not change to reflect the season. Very difficult to meet when business is slow.
3. Disrespectful customers who expect you to know every detail about every product (Even from other floors/ departments of the store)
4. Constant pressure from managers to sell more/ process more credit card applications, no matter how well you're doing
5. When customers return an item you've sold them, it is deducted from your sales goal. Often times you will start the day off in the negative and have to make it up, as well as the pre-set goal
6. Promotions and raises are solely based on sales and credit applications. Many employees will never see a raise
7. No teamwork. Very competitive co-workers even in non-commissioned areas. Co-workers will 'steal' you customers and sales
Advice to Senior Management
Hard working employees are being let go because they are unable to meet sales goals. Other employees are being rewarded for stealing sales and not acting with integrity (which is supposed to be one of Macy's standards!). Evaluations should be based on overall performance, not just how much you sell. Offer more product training, it will greatly improve the employee's ability to sell if they are educated about the merchandise they offer.
Pros
- flexible hours for school
- employee discount and knowing when sales start in advance (to put items you want to purchase on hold)
Cons
- pay was not competitive and low
- constantly nagged to open new Macy's credit card accounts
- overworked on weekends/holidays
- management didn't 'manage' -- other department problems sometimes spilled over to your department (eg: covering for someone, doing go-backs for them or cleaning up their department because of poor scheduling)
Advice to Senior Management
- train management better
- provide better benefits and incentives to employees
- hire more people for holidays/weekends
- treat your employees with respect
Pros
It was a great experience and allowed for upward mobility. It was also a great location that was convinient to me.
Cons
There was a drive to sale lots of things without any compensation for reaching those goals put on us by the managers.
Advice to Senior Management
There is no advice to the managers besides help to create an environment where people can make more money than what they do.
Pros
Employee discount, including getting mailed coupons
Coupons exclusively for friends/family
Get to be around newest fashions
Other employees were friendly for the most part
Cons
Pay for sales associates was not that great
Sometimes overwhelming (once stood at the same register for five hours straight ringing customers up)
Some departments are overlooked
Duties of other departments sometime spill over to other departments
Constant nagging to open credit accounts (understandable, but it was really annoying)
Advice to Senior Management
Think of more ways to motivate employees.
Maybe incorporate some team-building exercises.
If you already have not done so, upgrade registers.
Pros
Nice people, nice work environment, great products, interesting goals.
Good benefits package. It is fine for seasonal employment or to just get by for a while.
Cons
Day to day can get boring sometimes. Customers are annoyed if they are not attended to quickly enough. Management needs to listen to employees event if they're part time.
Advice to Senior Management
Listen to your employees, all of them. Some out of the box ideas could come from even part time hires.
Pros
the managers are easy going and the atmosphere of the store is great. its a busy and fun place to work during the holidays.
Cons
There are no great benefits offered at Macys, also the process of moving up within the company can be slow.
Advice to Senior Management
Be more involved wiith employees. Overall management doesnt have alot of flaws.
Pros
Great management for the most part, clothes are wonderful and being a Specialist gives you some extra incentives such as bonuses and gratis (free merchandise).
Cons
Responsible for opening new store accounts (credit cards) and much of your goals arfe based around that. You might as well be working at a bank because you are required to open 4 per week for full timers.
Advice to Senior Management
Follow through with what you say you're going to do. Often times things are said by team leaders, and then there is no dedication behind it.
Pros
It was a nice place to work though customers can be rude. The management team can change a lot so it's not a something I would say is stable. Might be just my department
Cons
I guess I don't have anything bad to say other than the typical rude customers, no benefits for part time employees, clocking and out.
Advice to Senior Management
No
Pros
It's a well-known department store and the experience there is good for entry-level retail sales.
Cons
The department manager in my department never worked the same shift as me so it was hard to "get to know" your supervisors.
Advice to Senior Management
Be more attentive of sales associates and their accomplishments. Take the time to motivate employees and encourage outstanding customer service. Use leadership roles to cross train and implement successful training programs that entice the workplace.
Pros
DISCOUNTS, DISCOUNTS, DISCOUNTS!!! Great people, very team oriented, management knowledge of their departments, being able to work where you like to shop.
Cons
The pay is not great, loss prevention's main job is to look at employees every move; to catch stealing and the like. Having to enter through the employee entrance if you go to your "home" store and having loss prevention check all your items before and after you're off.
Advice to Senior Management
There should be a more effective way of letting all employees know what the new plan for the stores are instead of having to hear that the store would be changing some policies from customers.
