    Pros

    Fans and Guests - Event set ups are interesting and neat- a lot of really great people work at MSG
    Plenty of work/life balance cause you won't get enough hours to make your wife/family feel as if you work too much - they help make sure you never will

    Cons

    Low pay - severe schedule cuts (1-2-3) days while they hire more people in dept = no benefits. Managers across all depts. play serious favorites game so a lot of really NOT great people get away with really bad actions and behaviors towards coworkers. The people who create the magic at MSG are the most neglected and badly treated workers

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Sadly unaware of morale and the culture within the event facility
    HR: stop making people think they are getting a" foot in the door"

    Pros

    Great place to be employed, great benefits, great support of their teams with free stuff for employees. Hank Ratner is not the CEO anymore, it's Tad Smith.

    Cons

    Culture is messed up driven by top level management. Lost a lot of key executives in the last 18 months due to sideways growth. Too many high level executives taking advantage of corporate naivete from ownership.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    You lost a lot of smart experts in the business by ignoring their advise and business smarts. Instead you listen to egotistical powerful friends in LA and in Movie-world who have ownership wrapped around their little twinkie. Company is being used and abused, and it's really too bad, for it is the "world's most famous arena" going in the wrong direction.

    - Great Content Assets and Financial Resources
    - Access to Live Shows and Sporting Events
    - Great Brand Strength
    - Location - Literally right on top of Penn Station

    - Good Ol' Boys, Top-Down Hierarchical, Antiquated Corporate Culture
    - Departments are completely Silioed
    - Lack of Transparency
    - Culture of Fear
    - Legacy talent and resources that haven't kept their skills up-to-date
    - Location - Literally right on top of Penn Station

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Embrace new talent with fresh ideas that can take advantage of the great content assets and resources that this company has to offer. Get rid of the dead weight that is draining the life blood out of the organization. Embrace technology and step into the 21st Century.

    Cons

    Senior management needs to provide more support and encouragement to its HR personnel. It is very clear that Ratner would rather eliminate the HR function altogether.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Wake up! Your saving grace is the value of your HR function and your employees. Look towards building an organization that is more supportive of its employees and less dictatorial.

    The people are one of the most talented, professional individuals supported an organization they deem as iconic.

    Cons

    The recent introduction of a new Head of HR with little to no experience in knowing how to run a department in an organization of this magnitude. HR management continues to be a hinderence in promoting employee progression, retention and keeping management from being able to manage their individual departments. New HR Head treating its employees as incompetent wihout promoting development..

    Rethink the decision to hire someone from a minor unsuccessful media entity and recruit a more polished professional senior HR executive with the vision and ability to lead a proper HR function.

    Pros

    Madison Square Garden is a great place to have on your resume , and you will learn more here about your discipline than you will learn at any other company.

    Benefits are fantastic.

    I love the people I work with - we truly are a family (you have to be because you see them more than you do your own friends or family)

    If you are a fan of the sports teams and work for the sports department, you have access to incredible resources.

    Cons

    You are expected to work at an extremely fast pace under incredibly tight deadlines, and even the smallest, most minute projects are classified as extremely urgent. Upper management gets bogged down in micromanaging the minutae, does not trust lower-level staff, and the approval process is unlike anything I have ever witnessed (read: anywhere between ten and fifteen people will need to approve).

    The hours are insane (80 to 90 hour weeks, typically 6 days a week, sometimes 7 depending on your department) and the compensation is incredibly low.

    Many people run on the fear of "being yelled at", and therefore, you will spend hours worrying about trivial details. For example, one co-worker actually spent hours on a Sunday measuring the distance of the spacing between automated bullets in a word document.

    Although an employer could never deny time off, taking days off is extremely difficult. Staff is made to feel guilty, often because there are so many projects going on at once and everyone is overworked. Staff often feels guilty for leaving before 8 pm or taking a day off.

    Extremely understaffed. Most positions in normal companies would be broken up over three or four positions.

    Pay is incredibly low. Work investment banker hours and get paid an entry level salary (even for middle management). Admittedly because this is MSG and people would do anything to work here.

    Long hours affect personal relationships - I go for months without visiting family (who only live 30 minutes away), rarely see friends during the season. Rarely see fiance or friends and no matter how hard you try, distance puts a strain on relationships.

    Turnover is incredibly high. Two separate months saw the exit of 80% of staff for two different departments. Somewhere between 40 or 50 people resigned in a 6 months period.

    Secrecy from upper management.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Let employees have more ownership over work.

    Don't make employees feel guilty for taking vacation days.

    Don't feed into breeding fear into getting results.

    -Its Madison Square Garden!
    -Brand recognition
    -Very 9-5 job. Gives good opportunity to people looking for long term stability without career progression, laid back work life or mothers. However, no flexibility in 9 to 5 hours. MUST BE IN during these hours and these hours alone.

    Cons

    - Management perennially stuck in 70s - 80s mindset. VERY old school thinking.
    - Deep hierarchy. Limited interaction with management, even with direct reports.
    - No creative thinking to any problem solution. Do-as-told and speak-when-spoken-to attitude thru out the organization
    - Zero career training, external education, internal brown bags etc. Knowledge sharing doesn't exist
    - Management positions on an average have been filled by the same people for over 20 years which has stunted growth of various departments. No new ideas/people have been welcomed and thus has left the place with monotonous way of thinking.
    - No bonuses
    - Poor benefits package
    - Below average salaries
    - No growth opportunity

    Embrace the 21st century ideas and technology.
    Recognize the employees and their achievement.

    The ability to work with some amazing people. You won't care for the work or management but you'll definitely enjoy your coworkers and some of the guest

    Cons

    Clueless management. Seriously they have no clue how to speak to employees or even plan and execute new policies properly.

    Should start a mentorship program to help promote from within. Also communication amongst department must improve. Be pragmatic!! Plan ahead of time!

    Pros

    People (excluding Senior Management) are very good to work with and are good at their jobs.

    The television programming is excellent.

    Cons

    Senior Leadership is incredibly lacking and unskilled in creating a company culture that is either positive or inspiring. Rage and fear are the key motivation techniques employed to drive results. I've never worked at a company where morale is lower across the board than this one.

    There is zero opportunity for growth or advancement. The company does not pay fair market value and does not invest in growing leaders from their rank and file, unless you are related to or friendly with ownership (Dolan Family.)

    Try offering career development opportunity.
