Great environment if you like chaos, high tension, flying by seat of your pants and people blaming each other

I worked at Magellan Navigation full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Magellan provides a great outside view of what they used to be like as a company, unfortunately those days are long gone Great product ideas, very poor execution Finance - driven company No accountability Very process driven culture, where new and creative ideas outside of system just die Meetings and conference calls that never start on time Low salaries

    Cons

Company will push new products into market before testing them to make sure they work correctly leading to high return rates. Contentious conference calls and meetings Constant blaming internal groups instead of fixing the broken system Crazy work hours, since they are a Taiwanese Company, it's late nights and early mornings to speak to head office No salary increase, bonus or COLA last 4 years

    Advice to Management

Let the people who you hire actually do their jobs and not hold them back.. Looking back on my interview - i was forced to wait 6.5 hours from my set 11 am interview time for it to begin- I should have taken this as a sign of things to come, but was gung-ho to make my mark.

I have been working at Magellan Navigation full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

A small number of talented individuals

    Cons

This place is full of people who are not qualified for their job. This includes the head of engineering who is clueless on how to run an engineering team.

    Advice to Management

Get rid of the poor performers and those that are clearly not competent to do their jobs.

I have been working at Magellan Navigation full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

The work pace at Magellan is very fast and cutting edge. It's awesome to work for a company that may launch the next "must-have" consumer electronic device.

    Cons

The "Magellan" brand name was sold twice during my tenure with the company. As such, there was significant turnover and management changes and challenges.

    Advice to Management

Senior management needs to empower employees and learn to hold them accountable for results. Otherwise, the top/down management will continue to impair the company's ability to grow.

I have been working at Magellan Navigation full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Close to Costco & the airport. The work is interesting and challenging. Most of the Non-managerial employees are nice, good people.

    Cons

Stressful and chaotic for no real reason but lack of organization. Unreasonable demands and expectations.

    Advice to Management

    Get a new CEO

  11. 2007 market the high point for the company and the industry. Product now is about as relevant as buggy whips.

I worked at Magellan Navigation full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Some very bright and capable people working in parts of the organization, though between layoffs and people opting out, very few of the talented folks remain.

    Cons

Terribly disfunctional senior management. Neither Silver Lake or MiTAC demonstrated much in running the company from an operational standpoint. Industry has been in a nosedive since 2008, with average unit selling price dropping like a rock. Just a whole lot of ugly.

    Advice to Management

At your next organization, either come with a better plan, or be willing to listen.
