Pros
I worked in the IT department and was able to advance relatively quickly. Management was open to questions and offered career advice when asked.
Cons
Some managers survived on their personalities rather than their professional abilities, which made it more difficult to work in some departments.
Advice to Senior Management
I am grateful for the opportunities I had while working at Manor Care. I left the company because I had better salary offers elsewhere.
Pros
They have some good clinical systems - they just dont give you the tools to actually do them. If you have a decent RDO it is bearable.
Cons
benefits are horrific - the 10k annual out of pocket on a plan with only 75% coverage means you had better not get sick - or try to have a child unless you have at least 10k to pay out of pocket. The plan often doesn't cover things but then doesn't count them towards the 'max' out of pocket expense.
pay is lousy.
lots of unnecessary regional positions.
2% is not the average raise as they tell line staff - it is the MAX when they give instruction to administrators on how much of a raise you can give and 1.5% is to be the average. The insurance premiums increased by triple this amount for most employees last year.
They do not respect employees - A corporate HR person from Ohio told us recently "we aren't looking for those top level employees who can get well paid elsewhere - we are shooting more for the 2nd tier employees that we can afford" he said this to a room of mid level and building level managers and department heads - who are all presumably second tier.
Staffing is a problem. They don't cut nursing staffing in budgets - at least on paper. What they do is give impossible non nursing staffing numbers - 1 social worker for 150 patients, 4 people a day in a kitchen etc. then demand that you "find the hours" which means cut from nursing but can be denied later.
Pros
It is a very diverse company with a lot of different departments
Cons
It's a corporation with no union protection, therefore management can treat their employees anyway they want and nothing is done.
Advice to Senior Management
Stop being biased towards certain employees, especially new employees.
Pros
Friendly Professiona lClean Respectable Happy co-workers Happy residents
Cons
Some catty employees
Hours can be tough
Advice to Senior Management
Be straight forward
Pros
Benefits package is a bit expensive, but good coverage. NACs generally have a good rotating schedule (4 on 2 off, 4 on 1 off, 3 on 3 off-So every 3rd weekend is a 3 day weekend) and scheduling is relatively flexible, ability to trade shifts. Patient to staff ratio is pretty good for the most part.
Cons
Communication between departments virtually non-existent, which causes a lot of confusion and errors (meals, diets, care plans, discharges and admits, patient preferences, as well as incomplete employee files, lost messages, etc). Feeling of insecurity if you are towards the top of the NAC or nurse pay scale (they like to hire a lot of new, fresh out of school NACs/nurses that make base pay). Little to no praise from administration/head honchos for a job well done. Disorganization in management leading to compromise in quality care.
Advice to Senior Management
More involvement from management in daily activities on the floor, more praise and appreciation for employees lower on the totem pole. Detailed instructions to each department on communication with other departments (Who do I report to what? When? What do I do with what is reported to me?) Attempt to increase bond between employees, encourage teamwork, utilize the staff with experience-put them in a lead position and educate all employees to work together.
Pros
Good training programs and attention to compliance issues.
Cons
Clinical and marketing operate in seperate silos- high turnover in the sales/marketing ranks.
Advice to Senior Management
Success requires a unique value proposition and consistent 'face' to build referral relationships.
Pros
This employer has constant turnover with CNA positions so CNA positions are always open. Great orientation process-give each new CNA to their company a full 10 days of training.
Cons
Working short is a common part of their CNA jobs.
Advice to Senior Management
Listen to your employees more. CNA's are the backbone of your company, yet are treated poorly.
Pros
Pays better than competitors in the area
Cons
Don't care about employees or patients- just making a profit.
Advice to Senior Management
Improve your standards for patient care
Pros
they are out of your business and allow you to do your job
Cons
the population is very low
Advice to Senior Management
