Pros
If they have a contract with a larger corporation and you have the skills, it's an "IN" to becoming hired by the corporation...but you must be crafty and ready the policies.
Cons
Your supervisor is in another location...could be in another state. Since you are contractor, your supervisor only has info on your performance by word-of-mouth. If you perform to the expectations of the actual corporation who contracted Manpower, you'll do very well.
Advice to Senior Management
Manpower manager should always be on site, as in the past.
Pros
Seasonal employment throughout the year
Easy Money
Cons
I am referring to the relationship between Walmart.com and Manpower Staffing which handles certain staffing requirements for the Walmart.com call-center in Hattiesburg. This is by far one of the most incompetent settings I've worked in.
With this economy, anyone will take any job they can and Manpower/Walmart.com is well-aware of this. A staffing agency makes money when their clients (businesses) meet their staffing needs with employees provided by the agency. So by its very nature, the more employees you rotate out of a client's office space (hiring/firing) the more money you make. This of course takes away all concern or regard for the livelihood and well-being of the employees. And Manpower/Walmart.com is a perfect example of this.
THEY WILL FIRE YOU FOR ANYTHING AND EVERYTHING
Walmart.com recently adopted a "paperless" policy, meaning you cannot have any sort of writing utensil on you while you are working. If you are "caught" with one, you will be instantly terminated. Same goes for cellular phones and other personal devices. The reason behind this is to protect confidential materials but there are plenty of companies out there that show trust to their employees by having a more laid back policy.
The quality of training is particularly poor in that you are not adequately prepared by the time you go live on the floor, and when you make a mistake the management feels you are to blame. You are only allowed so many "criticals" before you are "coached" or terminated.
Advice to Senior Management
You will get a much better quality product out of your employees if you treat them like adults.
Pros
Learned a lot. I told them my goals of finding a perm job and I feel they really looked out for me.
Cons
Jobs could end without warning. Also sometimes a week or two could go by and they wouldn't have any work for me. I only wanted jobs that could lead to perm employment and a lot of times I knew more than the people who worked at the job and I took on more responsibilities but wasn't compensated for it.
Advice to Senior Management
Really make sure that the job descriptions match your agent. Also if an agent tells you that the job is requesting that work be done outside of the original parameters, you should renegotiate the contract so your agent gets paid accordingly.
Pros
Better temp wages than most competitors
Cons
little if no communication about milestones, performance, etc
Advice to Senior Management
Find a way to show commitment or involvement with the employees.
Pros
Can be fun - if you like the staffing industry.
Cons
They want to branch out - into placement, and into types of staffing that really are not their niche.
Advice to Senior Management
Stick to what the company does well. The rebranding was ineffective.
Pros
Flexible
Work from home
Meet lots of people
Recognizable brand
Cons
Merger with Comsys
Candidate experience always seems poor
More revenue driven than customer service
Pros
Great benefits, lots of opportunity for career growth- there's a lot to be said for working with an industry leader.
Cons
Lots of transition with branding- it is creating a lot of opportunities and will help build market share in the long run.
Advice to Senior Management
Keep up the good work and lets become a household name when it comes to staffing.
Pros
Top dog in the industry for financial performance and leadership capability. Wonderful mission to put people to work. Hard working field managers. Workforce feels pretty engaged. Excellent benefits package for workers.
Cons
Have to be mobile to expand career. Salaries may be the best in the industry but not competitive with other major employers of similar size or reputation within their own industry.
Advice to Senior Management
Your hard work to make workers feel valued in non-monetary ways is very good. But there must be an equal interest, and investment, in base pay to retain quality employees.
Pros
different kinds of jobs, a supportive office staff that seems friendly, connections with local employers to place potential employees.
Cons
not many jobs available, pay for jobs is low, no benefits except by paying fully for yourself.
Advice to Senior Management
offer more job choices with better pay, and be more proactive in contact potential employees about those job opportunities.
Pros
Flexible work schedule
Competitive salary
Benefits available
Cons
Poor communication from management
Poor follow up from team leaders
Seems to be more motivated by $ than customer satisfaction
Advice to Senior Management
More emphasis should be placed on innovative, current tools of the trade. Make sure the customer has a positive experience.
