I have been working at Manulife Financial full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Good salary, lots of annual leaves, colleagues are supportive

    Cons

    1. Need to work for long hours, leaving early will be labelled as "lazy" and "irresponsible"

    2. Poor communication between staff and manager, no feedback on performance.

    3. Management does not know how to manage staff, only knows to blame staff

    4. Bad location - out of city, while all other companies are in the city

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Move into the city will make people feel happier. AVP should be trained on management skills.

I worked at Manulife Financial as a contractor

    Pros

Stable work environment. Cafeteria is great. Office is climate-controlled...

    Cons

No windows. High stress environment and tight deadlines lead to an employee culture of frequently skipping lunches and "volunteering hours", which is technically discouraged but still happens regularly. The vast majority of employees have workplace injuries associated with their jobs--chronic back pain, shoulder pain, and wrist weakness. The half-hour lunch is the only guaranteed break. Most people have been in their current position for years (aka little career development). Quotas have increased drastically while employee wages and benefits barely change. Much gossip and discontent among workers, both temp and perm. Very little career development opportunities within the scope of this department.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You are burning out your front-line workers, who are literally handling hundreds of thousands (if not millions!) of dollars in cheques each day.

I worked at Manulife Financial full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Only recommend for people who do not have financial industry experience but need a place to build up. Not worth of staying long.

    Cons

Two type of people survive in this company: people with smooth tongue or silent sheep.
While Donald G. is trying to build an organization, certain middle mgmt are busy in building their own regime. Different voice will be shut off and kicked out…

I have been working at Manulife Financial full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Head office grounds are well maintained

    Cons

Highest leader levels in HR are unethical and do not represent the interest of the company- highly politically charged environment. Diverse opinions and perspectives are not welcome.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Innovation, collaboration and social responsibility/sustainability are the key drivers for business success. De-layering an organization does not get you there..it only makes you a bit more agile. Think long and hard about your culture and understand it is your barrier to success and it starts from the top!

I worked at Manulife Financial full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Work-life balance. Lots of opportunities to give back to the community especially through the food bank. Flexible hours of work.

    Cons

Hard work does not seem to be rewarded. You have to basically, for lack of a better expression, suck up to your manager in order to get a promotion or good review. The pay is terrible. They take advantage of contract workers.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Reduce the levels of management and employ managers who are well-educated. Not online degree holders and high school diploma holders.

    Pros

Several conferences throughout the year with lots of free alcohol!

    Cons

Sweat shop environment that is driven by call centre metrics: dials and meetings booked.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

It's nice that our CEO gets a raise, what about regular Manulife employees? What happened to controlling expenses? Management should lead by example.
