I have been working at Maple Leaf Foods

    Pros

Pay and benefits are above average. 3 weeks vacation to start.

    Cons

Expect to work long hours daily and many weekends. Company promises people a lot of things but rarely delivers. I don't think the change the company is going through is helping the situation.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't just preach the company values, practice them.

    Cons

Talks work/life balance, but does not always allow for it. Strict adherence to upper management dictates conflicts with operational needs.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

be more responsive to operational needs to need company supply commitments

A clash between The "old" and the "new"

I worked at Maple Leaf Foods as a contractor

    Pros

    - very welcoming
    - lots to re-build and re-establish (work opportunities)
    - Maple Leaf is slowing changing its view to be more future-focused with acquiring younger talent. (a slow process due to the union)

    Cons

    - A lot of old stubborn employees who are just not competent nor compliant of today's job market
    - advancement is questionable due to the older employees "hangin' in there"
    - loss of cohesion between departments
    - too many rulers not enough leaders

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Not all Management has the right mind set nor is capable of the position they hold. This is something that should be addressed as its time for the rulers to be kicked and leaders promoted.

I have been working at Maple Leaf Foods as a contractor (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Great people who care about what they're doing. Its refreshing to see that in a company

    Cons

It's a big company that has been created by purchases of little ones. depending on which of these Business units you end up working for your experience may vary. Very fair yet at times hectic environment.

Former Employee - Production Supervisor in Surrey, BC (Canada)

I worked at Maple Leaf Foods full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Floor / production employees cared alot about the product produced. Very concerned with quality and presentation.

    Cons

Plant now closed. Local management had little regard for staff. HR was very ineffective...except good at planning decorations for all the seasons... hardly relevant to HR.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Michael McCain and his ego are the root of the problem. I understand building shareholder value but the sacrifice of hardworking people consistently and destroying the Schneider brand just to say he could is unbelievable.
