Conservative, Backward, Boys Club

Brand Management Intern (Former Employee)
Atlanta, GA

I worked at Marathon Petroleum as an intern for less than a year

ProsThey gave me a relocation bonus when they moved me to work in a satellite office in Atlanta

ConsThey made me drive around by myself to rural and dangerous urban areas to take pictures of gas stations. In answer to my questions my boss, more often than not answered: "You wouldn't understand", there was no inter-office unity and I was isolated from the rest of the interns who worked at headquarters, the office was full of buttoned up middle aged men who did things together but never thought to invite anyone else. Terrible work environment. Oh and when I asked what they were going to use my culminating project for they told me that it probably wouldn't be used for naything.

Advice to Senior ManagementTeach your managers how to deal with interns. Teach men how to include and respect women. Create a more formal program for interns that both helps them develop AND keeps them in a more safe evironment. Challenge the interns more and include them in more meetings so they can learn. Also, be more up front about the aspects of the role.

Great Company - Great Industry - Great Career

Procurement Contracts Representative (Current Employee)
Findlay, OH

I have been working at Marathon Petroleum

Pros- Above average compensation for location/industry
- Advancement opportunities if you are flexible with location
- Strong co-workers and team support
- Ability to have an impact
- Employee investment is high as they reimburse you for formal education and encourage various training
- Work/life balance is typically strong
- Challenging responsibilities, especially if you demand the work

Cons- Very conservative environment
- Zero sustainability with internal department processes/strategic initiatives
- Questionable personnel placement
- Although you can expect to be promoted, the process is very slow, even if the appropriate skill set is there and the work was put in

Advice to Senior Management- Invest more time in selecting candidates for mid-level management
- Expose more employees to field environment if they have primarily worked in corporate and vice versa
- Reward employees for taking on temporary assignments

ProsThe work was very easy and we never had to do anything but the pay wasn't very good or high at all

ConsCleaning bath rooms sucked and it stunk and the pay was way to low for the work I had to do

Work is interesting. Findlay is a good town to raise a family.

Information Technology Integrator (Current Employee)
Findlay, OH

I have been working at Marathon Petroleum

ProsMarathon Petroleum is very good at giving you interesting work assignments. People are willing to help and for the most part supportive. Pay is good and you have the potential for a yearly bonus.

ConsMarathon pays their hourly people like the admin assistants very poorly. Marathon stresses integrity but they take advantage of their contractors. There are a lot of contractors from India. So much for that old slogan they had about an American company serving America. Marathon treats the engineers very well. Not so much the other disciplines.

It was wonderful, often not enough work to do, but thats corporate.

Entry Level Accounting Intern (Former Employee)
Findlay, OH

I worked at Marathon Petroleum

ProsPeople were awesome, very approachable. The work wasn't too bad, and someone always there to help if you ran into trouble. plenty of other interns so easy to make friends.

Consi was in the engineering department as an accountant. so i felt kinda left out, and there was a huge pay differential. however, they worked harder. as the accounting intern i didn't do much real work, basic knowledge of excel put me leaps and bounds beyond the rest of my department which made all work they handed to me pretty easy. however, the engineers seemed pretty busy.

Advice to Senior Managementplease give me more work. i feel bad sitting in the office doing nothing or perusing the internet. i don't want to work for a company where i don't do anything all day.

Lots of politics. A place where supervisors management doesn't like to be challenged.

Territory Manager (Current Employee)
Findlay, OH

I have been working at Marathon Petroleum

ProsGreat benefits. Some of the leadership are good, others need improvement. They stay competitive with salaries. Very good with vacations and health leaves.

ConsVery change-adverse. Location of headquarters are very unfavorable. No one likes living in Findlay, Ohio where everything lacks, especially culture. Everyone I've talked to wants to move out of there asap.

The company, on the other hand, has a lot of politics going on behind the scenes. If somebody challenges their process, they turn the other cheek.

The open door policy exists only in certain organizations at Marathon. Within each organization, each department is led very differently. Depending on the manager you have will determine how far you will advance and how happy you will be in your job. There are many supervisors who operate in a "two face" manner. They will tell their subordinate about one thing, but say another when in the face of their manager. Supervisors at Marathon are not very well-trained. They look out for themselves rather than their team. They only care about their own advancement instead of who they are supposed to lead.

Training also needs to be more uniform across each organization.

Advice to Senior ManagementManagement needs to monitor their supervisors more carefully. Many supervisors do not walk the talk and need to have their performance checked.
