It was a worthwhile experience and enjoyed my time as a co-op

I worked at Marathon Petroleum as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

The work environment is team oriented and people are always available if you have questions. They offer competitive salaries and there is a lot of room for growth if you're a driven person.

    Cons

This company gives far too much power to human resources. They may hire an A+ candidate this time around, and next time it may be someone who just scooted by in college. You never know who they will hire. They also seem to have an obsession with engineering degrees. There are jobs I've seen highly qualified people get rejected for, when an engineering degree wasn't even necessary.....but that's the fine print that they won't tell you about. So be prepared for rejection if you're not a chemical engineer or any other type of engineer.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Final approval for jobs should be up to the appropriate department and not HR. Some individuals who I had direct experience with (in HR) were less than useless. They failed to return phone calls and emails, and botched important details in a few areas. It makes one wonder how those people get corporate level jobs, when returning a phone call or email seems to be a challenge.....when people skills is the main point of their job. This company misses out an a lot of highly qualified people because of currently policy and personnel in HR.

I worked at Marathon Petroleum full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

The company pays well and offers great benefits. When it comes to compensation they are very competitive. Family like atmosphere due to many husbands and wives working both for Marathon. Work life balance seems really good for a larger fortune 500 company. 40 hours is expected of you but sometimes you will be working more.

    Cons

There IT department is a little behind in the times. If you are looking to develop with cutting edge technology, this company is not really for you. Their location in FIndlay, OH is far from the best place to live. If you are looking to start a family in a somewhat smaller city, it may be for you. The biggest con I had with the company was their own culture/values. Considering they are a large oil company, very rarely did my values align with the company.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be more open to new ideas and new ways of doing things. Invest in your IT department.

Co-op Experience Maintenance Department (Mech Eng)

I worked at Marathon Petroleum as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

    - Treated like a real employee not just some paper pusher
    - Great pay for a co-op
    - Free reign on projects to proceed how you see fit
    - Interesting work, stimulating and challenging
    - Mentors and coworkers always available during or after work for advice
    - Treat employees great even had a free ice cream day
    - Volunteer opportunities on paid time

    Cons

    - Remember you are in a professional environment and not at school with your friends. While your coworkers are polite they are not your buddies you share stories with as those stories will be relayed to your boss for review.
    - Slow moving process change and approval

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    - Supervisors if you don't have daily interaction with your co-ops rely on the mentors opinion more than your 1 or 2 actions with them. Everyone makes mistakes in transitioning to a new environment in a different company and if the mentor is telling the co-op they are doing great, if you feel differently you can't wait until the end of the term and blindside them without giving them a chance to improve.

I worked at Marathon Petroleum part-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Steady work, relatively easy duties, with standard hours.

    Cons

Most store jobs are dead end with literally no room for advancement beyond the possibility of Assistant Store Manager or Store Manager. Extremely monotonous.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I have been working at Marathon Petroleum as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

    Compensation and Benefits
Emphasis on movement throughout different roles in the company
    Culture of Safety in refineries
    Locations all around America

    Cons

    Poor work-life balance
Most people that I worked with did not enjoy their jobs
    Overly aggressive HR department
Movement required to proceed up ladder

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hire more employees to reduce load on each employee. It was discouraging as an intern hearing so many tell me that they hated how much the company required of them.
