I worked at MarineMax full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

    Competitive Pay
    Relocation Opportunities
    Large Dealer Network
    Strong Training Programs
    Great Brand Portfolio

    Cons

The biggest struggle I faced was the competing agendas among top management (C-Level), regional presidents, and general managers in relation to my career development. The lack of communication between each level and myself is what led me to pursue other opportunities.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Open up the dialog a little more with your employees who wish to take on additional responsibilities.

I worked at MarineMax full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

    It was a job.
    Good people who work hard.

    Cons

Company does not repay loyalty, dedication, seniority.
Hire people with no boating knowledge in at more money than current employees.
One store may have 4 separate employees doing 4 separate jobs - -one store may only have 1 person doing all of those jobs.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Treat loyalty with respect and reward dedication if you don't want a lot of turnover.
Employees will stay if they are paid what they are worth.

I have been working at MarineMax full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Great Benefits-Med/Dent, PTO, 401K , Stock purchase plan
    Great customers
    Can be fun at times
Great experience in boating/education as well
    Nice co-workers

    Cons

    Long hours
Pay raises far & few between
Must volunteer for weekend customer events
    Work comes first then family

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Focus more on your Team Members if not for them where would Marinemax be? Cut out the annual December executive's Cruise, and reward you're Team Members instead. I'm sure that gesture would be very appreciated. Get back to a more family oriented company within. It would payoff in the long run.

Burnout Job in a Struggling Industry

I worked at MarineMax full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

    1. Large company with numerous resources one can use for personal development.
    2. Good benefits, 401K, PTO
    3. Potential to be a fun work environment and get to enjoy taking boats out on the water and participate in customer boating excursions
    4. Good brands to sell: Sea Ray, Boston Whaler, Bayliner, Nautique, Cabo yachts...
    5. Good use of CRM to help sales associates organize customers
    6. If your location is lucky enough to have a delivery captain, this person acts as terrific PR for your product, and can be an invaluable resource to new boaters
    7. Great customer care and introduction to boating

    Cons

Note: Each of the 50 plus MarineMax stores in the U.S. is run by a manager. These stores are separated by regional groups with executive level management in charge of each region. Because of the way the company works, the experiences of one location's employees can vary largely from another's based on the way each manager chooses to run the location. During my time at MarineMax, I worked in a struggling location under unstable management. If you consider working here, make sure to consider how stable that location is before choosing to work there. In my experience:
    1. New sales associates not properly trained to be successful
    2. Management not trained enough to help employees succeed
    3. Expectation to work long hours for weeks on end
    4. Work more important than personal life, important family events
    5. Managers will often get involved in deals to get a boat sold... this can very negatively affect commission even when managers make mistakes on the deal
    6. Minimal pre-owned inventory, boats on lot not what customers looking for, so difficult to sell
    7. More interested in making the sell than customer care after the sale

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take care and nurture potential of sales associates so they will stay with the company. Make sure you set managers up for success, not failure.

I have been working at MarineMax full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Great team effort to support customers and training for staff. Competitive pay and holiday pay (PTO).
Corporate visits to share reviews, planning and goals. Over all great company.

    Cons

Advance in pay is difficult once your locked in. I've worked two years without a raise. Management changes often so direction of company gets lost, goals and ways of leadership continue to change with new managers. (Three new managers in two years)

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Build your team from the inside-out. Be more efficient with those who can offer more and weed out the ones who do not make you profit. You have strong people within the company but are not advancing them. Reward those who make profit from the bottom up. Hire managers with boating experience and real passion for people not just the sale.

I worked at MarineMax full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

great co-workers - could be fun at times

    Cons

no incentives - don't let the door hit you in the a$% mentality from management - workload not evenly distributed - raises few and far between

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

reward hard workers - advance those who deserve it - be honest - be honest - be honest

due to financial reasons had to relocate - remember once hearing "if someone needed to relocate MarineMax would accommodate". over a month now and no return calls from anyone. took that long just to get my last check. this coming from a place that said they didn't want to lose me.
