Company means well, but expects a lot for little compensation

Sales Representative (Former Employee) Hudson, OH

ProsFriendly staff at the home office, predictable schedule.

ConsExpected to attend many meeting and drive long distances to accounts for no compensation for time or travel. Encouraged to drive sales, but no real sales aids provided. Sales numbers are based on customer orders, which is obviously economy driven since the products are groceries. Working with volunteers at accounts, who often aren't flexible with company requests. Accounts are not assigned by your geographical area, often I was driving 45 minutes to get to small accounts. Sales managers have good intentions, but are spread too thin and cannot keep up with requests or questions, I have never witnessed turn over as high as I saw with sales managers at Market Day.

Advice to Senior ManagementCompensation needs to be more based on hours worked. The base pay needs to be adjusted, after taxes it is pretty pitiful. Even the most well scheduled sale takes at least 3 hours from drop off to conclusion of the sale, based on the company dictated truck time and early arrival time of the salesperson and staying until the last order is paid for. A base compensation is fine, but for the additional planning and sales meetings that were encouraged, there needs to be a reimbursement for mileage and time. The company is a unique company with potential, but employees are not valued based on hour requirements and minimal compensation.

    Don't even start....

Sales Manager (Former Employee) Chicago, IL

ProsThe people doing all the work below corporate are great people to work with.

ConsThe concept is a good one, however it is totally outdated and the company needs to bring itself up to speed with the times. Senior management was brought in from major consumer products companies and has no idea how to run a fundraising business. The learning curve for this job is at least a year to get up to speed. Salaries are EXTREMELY LOW. Makes you feel like they think they expect you to volunteer your time. Raises are virtually nonexistant. They expect unpaid volunteers at the schools and other organizations to increase sales. Downward communication to Managers was totally lost many time on very critical sales issues. Computer systems are atiquated. I'll be surprised if the company even exists 5 yrs from now.

Advice to Senior ManagementStop counting on the advice from a Marketing and Merchandising team that has been there since the company began and continues to put out the same thing year after year. Get up with the times...hire a new Marketing team that will bring NEW ideas to the table. Listen to what Sales is telling you. They are the ones dealing with the customer....and if you don't have customers, you don't have a company.

Pay is low for the amount of work you do for the sale.

Sales Representative (Current Employee) VarieŇ°i (Latvia)

ProsEnjoy helping groups. Know you schedule for the school year Sales are late in the day so this is a good second job.

ConsThe pay is commission for a event and they expect a lot of work for the 60.00 minimum you get for the sale

Advice to Senior ManagementPay the sales rep on the fundraiser total like you do for the group, instead of the amount you bill the group. Pay the rep for attending events to promote the sale.
