I worked at MarketTools full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

There were some great people there and interesting projects.

    Cons

Incredible amount of turnover, people lost their positions because of internal politics, etc. Very old fashioned despite being an "internet-based" market research company.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Reward all of your employees. Don't burn people out so fast. Don't expect everyone to be able to work 60 or 70 hours a week. Some people actually have families.

I have been working at MarketTools full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

The people, the ability to advance and grow in different functional roles within the organization, and the technology team is the best in the industry.

    Cons

The compensation is on par with other companies but I think the more tenured employees would like to see a little more.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Continue to share the successes and failures of the company in order to keep people informed and engaged.

    Cons

    I worked at MarketTools

    Pros

MarketTools has been able to attract smart people and provide them a good work-life balance, as well as the opportunity to work on some interesting products.

    Cons

Scattered strategy, lack of investment in and poor senior management understanding of product development, assorted internal people and process bottlenecks which slowed things down.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Focus on being disruptive and pick key areas of expertise, rather than trying to be all things to all clients.

    I worked at MarketTools

    Pros

Really smart people (but the best don't last long).
    High expectations from management.
    Decent salary

    Cons

Leadership is terrible and doesn't listen to employees, especially HR leadership.
    Very politically charged environment.
    Absolutely no work/life balance.
    Constantly changing priorities...not strategic vision.
    Lots of favoritism.
The good people don't stay long...revolving door.
Employees are afraid to express their concerns because of threat of termination.
    Many, many layoffs.
    I was miserable there.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to your employees. Get a vision (strategic or otherwise). Stop picking favorites.

I have been working at MarketTools

    Pros

The executive leadership here is incredibly competent and managers are smart, fair, and accessible and invested. Everyone I work with is excellent at their job, friendly and helpful. When I interviewed here I was immediately struck by how personable everyone was and how much they cared about finding the right person who not only had the right skills but had the right attitude.
I’ve been consistently wowed by my colleagues and enjoy seeing how each of us can effect change when needed.

    Cons

Market Research as an industry is pretty conservative and Markettools is no exception, the offices are a bit bland and the décor could use a little oomph.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

In order to compete with other tech companies and market research firms for top talent we need a more exciting work environment that incorporates a sense of humor. Not necessarily Google style but some fun cubicles and bean bag chairs wouldn't hurt.

I have been working at MarketTools

    Pros

For a developer its a great place to work because of the amount of development currently going on. The people that work here are great and its in one of the best parts of San Francisco to work.

    Cons

Necessary positions are often not approved and the workload can become overwhelming. Of course this is due to the current economic situation but this is something to keep in mind when weighing options.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

We need to focus on the technology because we are in essence a technology company. The bottom line is important but it is the technology and the overall customer experience that will help improve that bottom line. We need more skilled employees and fewer but more technically savvy middle management.
