I worked at Markit (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Salary is decent. Some smart people, many successful products and huge client base. Not a huge demand to work long hours or weekends, so good work-life balance. Many offices all over the world.

    Cons

Difficult to progress unless you spend most of your energy figuring out who you need to become close with to help you get promoted. Company seems to be satisfied with having very stagnant employees. Not very ambitious culture. Lots of closed door meetings, Very little transparency internally.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Provide more clear ways for employees to advance their careers. If you are promoting transparency in the financial industry you should be transparent internally!

I have been working at Markit full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Mid level colleagues are friendly for the most part, which makes the day-to-day work tolerable.

There are a lot of moving parts and groups within the structure of the company. This makes for an exciting and challenging work environment. Its a technology company, with a banking feel, but not necessarily the strict rules or long hours.

    Cons

While the environment is not toxic, it is dysfunctional. The travel policy is atrocious. If your position requires you to travel, it helps to be open-minded and easy-going because nothing about the policy is says "Corporate Travel".

There are WAY too many managers managing other managers at this company, and no one is held accountable for missed objectives, rogue processes, bugs or data breaches.

At some point, they are going to realize they have 10 people doing the exact same job for the exact same clients, but because there is a serious lack of communication, and an over-zealous upper management need to acquire companies without truly integrating them, its a problem. The clients will just have to deal with it until the execs grow the balls to resolve the issue...the "if it ain't broke..." mentality.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Metrics based management without micro-managing should be the goal. Some companies have to "trim fat", this one really just needs to trim the bs. Otherwise, this is not a bad company to work for if someone is truly interested in working in the high-tech financial vender space.

    Pros

Relatively laid-back environment; decent pay; good place for someone to start his/her career

    Cons

Could be difficult to advance your career beyond certain point if you are not under the right manager, but I guess this is true of most companies. Work could get a bit repetitive after a while.

I worked at Markit full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Markit, in spite of itself hires some incredibly talented professionals. A very select group of managing directors can be viewed as true leaders - only one is part of the executive team, sadly.

    Cons

Well, let's start with the chaotic, rudderless leadership. Decision making is an abstract process - driven by ego, not strategy. Technology and new product development is about 10 years behind other market data providers. A select few "leaders" are completely unhinged - their personal issues on full display driving normal colleagues to despair and hastened exit strategies. Side show sums it up best - especially in NYC.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hire professionals who are normal, enthusiastic, provide direction and support. Act accordingly.

I worked at Markit full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

If you are prepared to work hard and are in a profitable business unit, opportunities exist to gain experience and learn new skills.

    Cons

Without a strong manager or in a business unit without strategic executive backing, little to no room for advancement. Lack of focus on engaging employees who joined firm via an acquisition.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Majority senior management has limited interaction with workforce.

I have been working at Markit full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Company is still in rapid growth mode, large potential for building out roles and functions.

    Cons

Leadership does not pay careful attention to its own management. Managers need development. Employee moral very low.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Some of the key managers do not manage very well. The key to any successful business is its foundation and if the lower level employee is not happy or feel like they are being heard or concern for their growth and development is not apparent, the foundation will crumble. Markit is experiencing alot of unnecessary turnover based on poor management.
