I worked at Markit full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The Boulder location got lots of food trucks; mostly reasonable schedule unless a project was on fire; cool side clubs (homebrewers, games, womens forum, etc); the super smart people totally prop up the capabilities; overall everyone is extremely nice and motivated; easy access to Boulder Creek Trail; health benefits etc are very good; reasonable allotment of PTO; working remote was never a hassle.

    Cons

Absolutely HORRID salaries: the Engineering teams are underpaid by 30-50% for this area; corporate oversight tightening like a noose around everything; glut in middle management – just because someone has tech skills and earns a Senior title, that does NOT make them an effective manager; huge amount of systems that are rarely enforced; projects are sometimes a gigantic mess that takes days to even understand, let alone work on; some of the "perks" such as subsidized gym memberships seem to be put out there very ad-hoc and are poorly administered; company "transparency" in townhall meetings is often backpedaled after the fact; job descriptions are VERY rigid, if you don't conform to the definitions, you will never move up the ranks or see much beyond a paltry 3% jump in compensation.

    Advice to Management

Quit promoting people to middle-manager roles who have no direct management experience. Stop making promises you can't keep. If the Boulder office is to survive, investments need to be made in technology (many environments stopped working and it was a big to-do to get just a few more production boxes which is a drop in the bucket for such a large company).

    Pros

Not too bad as a first job out of school. Maybe there are a few smart people you can learn from in your team.

    Cons

Terrible IT support. the structure of managment is a mess. Not have the right person to lead every project. You will be asked to do quite a lot out of normal work time. underpaid in the industry. There are just too many people seating there just do nothing useful.

I have been working at Markit full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Free lunch, average benefit, nice building+free parking

    Cons

long working hours for my group, too many unrealistic expectations(based on special projects, volume and etc) considering the pay is slightly below average.

    Advice to Management

Give it a standard 9-5 job or pay more

    Pros

    Friendly people. Laid back atmosphere.

    Cons

Unless you have expert prior knowledge of how financial markets and systems work, you will struggle to keep up as the training is more hands on and not focused.

    Advice to Management

When hiring someone from a different industry background, provide more intensive training to make sure they understand the product and industry.

I have been working at Markit full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Benefits are on par; lunch is catered M-Th; Can't speak for all the groups, but my Mgr has so far been really good; projects are a challenge but help is available; Mentorship pgm; everyone I have seen work really hard; work life balance is good; So far, what I have read and observed is true in that your product group and your Mgr has a big role in the opportunities you get; Mgr really want us to move on to bigger roles within the company and I feel he's facilitating that fairly well

    Cons

    salary is on the low side, but it's acceptable; I think if your tech skills are lacking, then your opportunities within the company will be limited;

    Pros

Relatively laid-back environment; decent pay; good place for someone to start his/her career

    Cons

Could be difficult to advance your career beyond certain point if you are not under the right manager, but I guess this is true of most companies. Work could get a bit repetitive after a while.

I worked at Markit full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Markit, in spite of itself hires some incredibly talented professionals. A very select group of managing directors can be viewed as true leaders - only one is part of the executive team, sadly.

    Cons

Well, let's start with the chaotic, rudderless leadership. Decision making is an abstract process - driven by ego, not strategy. Technology and new product development is about 10 years behind other market data providers. A select few "leaders" are completely unhinged - their personal issues on full display driving normal colleagues to despair and hastened exit strategies. Side show sums it up best - especially in NYC.

    Advice to Management

Hire professionals who are normal, enthusiastic, provide direction and support. Act accordingly.
