    I worked at Marquette University

    Pros

Wonderful university environment with an outstanding Biomedical Engineering program. Graduate students have the opportunities to work no only with the great professors on campus but also at the Milwaukee VA hospital, Medical College of Wisconsin, Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago, and Shriners Hospital for Children.

    Cons

Winters can be a bit rough, but you can always explore the 100s of local restaurants, bars, and breweries until the weekly summer festivals begin!

I have been working at Marquette University part-time (more than an year)

    Pros

The location is fantastic allowing employees access to the gym on site and an amazing array of technology to explore.
The other employees in the IT department are very friendly and a tight-knit group with an emphasis on a work hard, play hard attitude.

    Cons

Members of other departments are not always welcoming.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Maintain the culture of the department and do not allow outside influences to change the flow of work.

I have been working at Marquette University full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Good insurance, Nice co-workers, Worked her many years. Tuition Remission is a good benefit if used.

    Cons

Low pay for staff. A lot of management. HR not very helpful with reviews of job changes. Very reluctant to help staff with any problems. Not many incentives for car pooling, taking bus etc. Do not seem to value long time employees as much as the newer staff..

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Staff needs to be compensated for the jobs they do. You can't just giving them more work and not recognizing it either in their job title, pay or both. Don't be so quick to disregard long term employees there is a lot of wisdom you are dismissing.

    Adopt the party line

    I worked at Marquette University

    Pros

I enjoyed my work because it was an academic institution, so it felt good to contribute to the next generation of leaders and problem solvers. There is real meaning in that. I also worked directly with students, so I felt connected to the reality of their challenges and knew I made a difference in their education.

    Cons

There is intense unspoken pressure to toe the party line, even at the expense of being authentic and feeling like you're making a real contribution. This pressure extends all the way up and down the food chain and puts unnecessary restrictions on getting a job done right. The leaders don't want to upset big donors, so they cow tow to the donors' out-of-date beliefs rather than have courage to have difficult conversations and agree to disagree.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Practice authentic leadership and develop resilience skills to help you a) face dilemmas with difficult options and b) remain accurate in your thinking. Otherwise, eventually the house of cards will fall.
