Current Employee - Front Desk Agent in Detroit, MI

I have been working at Marriott full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

The people are great, and the company provides decent benefits. And the discounts are awesome. Some of the guests are cool to meet.

    Cons

It's hospitality so the hours are awful. You start either too early in the morning or end too late at night, and you never get weekends or holidays off. A lot of guests are very demanding and abusive to staff.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The philosophy of Marriott is putting employes first. More can be done for employees to make this promise a reality.

    Pros

I enjoyed the job of interacting with our guest to service their needs. I was provided with all the tools I needed to do a great job . I also was rewarded by the company as well as the guest with a warm smile and thank-you or a service award

    Cons

Dealing with large groups were sometimes trying because of their demands, but as a team member knew it was worth it

Always keep your associates in mind when you make changes in management

Current Employee - Front Desk Associate in Detroit, MI

I have been working at Marriott

    Pros

Huge network of hotels gives room to move around and be promoted
Management is usually understanding and respectful
Fun and young front desk staff
    Employee hotel discount is nice
Time at work goes by quickly because you are always busy

    Cons

LOW pay (barely above minimum wage) - makes it easy to burn out
    Training system has some flaws
Dealing with some RUDE, pushy, unrealistic people - you have to learn to not take complaints personally
The hours are hard to get used to, transitioning between early mornings and late nights
    Working on holidays

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Please find a way to pay the front desk staff a higher wage. Hire quality people who are great at the job, and the extra money you pay them would be well worth it. Don't hire idiots.

    I worked at Marriott

    Pros

Beautiful, professional work environment, staff is very team oriented, good pay, Food is excellent, and many opportunities to network with the who's who in detroit.

    Cons

If you syarted at a low position and are looking to advance, the current management does not want you to move up, they would rather take there chances on an outside candidate than on you. the diversity level, reminds me, of a plantation. all the majority(Whites) have the management positions in the office on the 26th floor and all the minorities have the service positions that do the bulk of the work for the actual private club.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Look within your service staff and receptionists to be your leaders in advancing to better positions within the company, they know the members better than anyone and they know the club inside out Who better to advance to membership, private events, member relations etc, than a person who knows the club inside out and has alot of pride about the company.

    I worked at Marriott

    Pros

Marriott Corporate Executives seem to have a clue about what happens in their hotels.

    Cons

Sometimes individual managers play negative politics and ruin the careers of great people all under the Leadership of the General Manager.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hire great General Managers that wil ensure Marriott Culture is carried out in operations.Be very selective who is on your Executive teams as these hotels because this is where the politics of blame take place and impacts others.
Hold General Managers accountable for the development of other Managers and don't let them make excuses.Make sure your Director of Human Resources is independent and doesn't get caught up the politics of fear.
