Pros
postiion is great for interacting with guest on a daily basis.
good position for expanding communication skills weather verbal or non verbally
opportunity to work Independently to gain the experiences of managerial skills
Cons
lack of communication between management and staff
unfairness in the work place
minimum of wage increase given to all employees
Advice to Senior Management
improve moral of the company
Pros
good opportunity for those who seek minimum experience in the working industry. has great benefits for employees, and somewhat of a notion for advancement on some Marriott properties
Cons
The upper management treat the employees like the don't exist, like they do not matter, and like they are ONLY hourly employees. They hire managers with no experience, so the structure is completely bad from the top to the bottom
Advice to Senior Management
The leadership is provided by people who are inexperienced and have no idea how to run a business. Hire quality people, who are qualified to complete a job rather than someone who can satisfactory can complete the job. experience should be required for necessary positions.
Pros
The management are all very considerate and thank you at the end of each shift. The companies provide lots of benefits and opportunities for personal/professional growth (e.g. tuition reimbursements, Rosetta Stone) which all makes for happy and a hospitable work environment. The company's ethos is that if employees are treated well they will then treat the guest well and the guests will return. Annual employee appreciation weeks and regular special employee events.
Cons
Very limited on site parking, "official" employee parking is about 1/2 a mile in the garage up the street and theres no shuttle service to provide transportation to it. So if you work late nights it can be intimidating.
The price of the employee meals isn't worth the cheap crockery its served on.
You sometimes lose a sense of yourself and feel like a robot.
Advice to Senior Management
Employees being priority is fantastic but you need to pay better attention to the what the employees truly want not just what the company benefits offer, things like better food and a shuttle service to the garage would be a great improvement.
Pros
Marriott Corporation has had an overall long tradition of good quality of service to customers and its employees as well. Every Marriott location is a franchise of the Marriott Corporation which headquarters are located in Bethesda, Maryland. Marriott franchises are located nation and worldwide which means that there is the opportunity to work and live in other places across the United States and out of it as well.
Cons
The fact that every Marriott location is a franchise means that there could be some variations in management styles, organizational behavior, and quality of service. In the specific case of the Global Reservation Center in Miami, I found that Miami has a high cost of living (compared to other places in Florida) and the hourly rate offered, in my case, was not a competitive hourly rate. After training, the hourly rate would increase to fifty cents more per hour which I think is not enough incentive. Apparently their financial situation is not so good since they were cutting hours, and hiring mostly certain "targeted groups" due to the incentives and credits the government gives to them for every recruitment of this kind.
Advice to Senior Management
To be more effective when interviewing and screening candidates because it seems that government credits given this employer are more important than finding the most competent employees.
Pros
Great Benefits for every employee
Cons
Relo. is a must if you want to move ahead.
Advice to Senior Management
Listen to your GA's
Pros
Benefits package, such as Medical, and 401K
Cons
The treatment is very poor, if you complaint of it to human resources,at the end, they won't support the
associate. They have a provision in their severance package guidelines, in which they can Laid you off during a sick leave of absence, and just for being sick, and unable to return to work at the end of the leave, they can and will no pay any severance at all.
Advice to Senior Management
Be aware of how your department manager is really treating their associates, but being more accessible and inquiring directly with the associates.
Pros
a name that everyone knows. a name that means quality. Anyone that sees that name on a resume will be impressed.
Cons
crazy hours and crazier customers. Very demanding work schedule. Always on call.
Advice to Senior Management
educate the workforce. look for the long term, not just short. Make more promotions from within. Make more visible roles for minorities
Pros
Growth Opportunities are endless and Travel Benefits for discounted hotel rates are wonderful.
Cons
Hotels are open 24 hours and so 40 works do not apply. More toward the 60-65 hours per week for managment. This is because the hourly paid staff un severly underpaid and never allowed overtime due to budgeting. Bonus structures were never clear. They were almost "guaranteed" when negotiating my salary. I never received even one in full in all 5 years I was with the company. Even when my individual goal was exceeded by 200% my group goal and training hours brought me down.
Advice to Senior Management
Higher salaries to be more competative at qualified personel. Work on less turnover and more qualified hourly staff. Allow some overtime or inscentives to keep staff motivated. The once a quarter cheesy staff party doesn't cut it.
