I have been working at Mars as a contractor (less than an year)

    Pros

Work life balance and flexibility of schedule is huge
Co-workers and supervisors respectful and clear about expectations
    Plenty of opportunity for work

    Cons

Difficult to navigate levels of management and what resources are available.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Training for support staff could be better v. throw it at 'em and hope it sticks.

    Pros

Great people who genuinely care about one another.
Industry leading marketing philosophies and competencies
    Smart and dedicated employees

    Cons

    Big and slow moving
Career advancement is often ambiguous and kept vague from employees. The qualifications or considerations for advancement change often and are not always communicated

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I have been working at Mars full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

    - Privately-owned
    - Behaviors/decisions based on 5 Principles
    - Strong dedication to career development
    - Significant global presence
    - Not just a Chocolate company. Have a look at our other brands...

    Cons

This is a lean company in that the office is realtively small given the sheer size of the business. This means you have the opportunity to take on LOTS of responsibility from very early on in your career. While some consider this a pro (like myself), this may prove intimidating for others.

One of the worst experiences of my career

I worked at Mars full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Great Brands - this company does business in spite of itself

    Cons

Low pay scale, unrealistic expectations with very little support, direction and/or training. Management seems constantly pre-occupied with politics and has no time or interest in fostering the growth of their associates. There is no clear career path - it's all in who you know, not how well you perform. I have seen more good people get bad annual reviews who did not deserve it, and they ultimately wind up leaving the company out of frustration.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Focus on your associates and their growth and development. It seems that since the company is privately held there is a lack of standards and processes that does not make for a fair workplace. MARS makes up the rules as they go along, and they change them however it suits them. It's a shameful business practice. Need fair and equitable standards and process to cultivate a thriving workplace of associates who get supported in their gowth for their careers, and not just beaten down all of the time. Invest in your people.

No where to go. they don't like to promote from within the factory because they would have to train somebody else new.

I have been working at Mars full-time

    Pros

Half decent pay. there were only 2 cost of living raises in the last 13 years.

    Cons

swing shift and NO advancement. management does NOT listen to the factory workers aka associates. what a joke. The Mars family is always on the list of the richest people in the world but they treat their employees terribly.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to the people under you, they will show you how things should run correctly.

I worked at Mars full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Endless amount of free chocolate, strong brands to work on, great health benefits, many resources and tools to do your job, great training (Mars U.), etc. Mostly really good, hard working people that care for the company. I do think that they try to keep the five principles working in action.

    Cons

The end of year review process is painful here. Even when you've done 8 out of 10 things on your individual business objectives (IBO's) well, your supervisor will spend 45 minutes beating you down on the two things that you could have done better. Hoping that part of the culture changes as the company evolves.

It does get a bit political as I've seen several associates get rewarded and promoted even though a program they worked on lost the company money and was mismanaged.

Hiring - Very focused currently on only ivy-league style MBAs... good thing to have a myriad of backgrounds and experiences, vs. all being so cookie cutter in approach.

Locations of most of the offices aren't ideal unless you want to live in the 'sticks'.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Focus on strengths of your associates/employees and reinforce the positives much more.. celebrate the wins.

Too political, not enough emphasis on what you know, it's who you know.

    Pros

Decent benefits package and good health, safety programs

    Cons

Too much politics for a promotion. Do not get promoted for your knowledge and work ethic, you get promoted for kissing up to the managers

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to your workers and get rid of the kiss up attitudes. Promote from within on what the associates know and their ability to do their jobs efficiently and responsibly. Get back to the 5 principles

I have been working at Mars full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Good benefits, pay and solid business fundamentals. The company understands the company and tries to do what is right for both customer and company. A true focus on the consumer.

    Cons

I believe there is good senior level management, but sometimes they become too internally focused and politics among mid level management may become a little tiresome.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

More collaboration and focus on customer

I have been working at Mars as an intern

    Pros

Colleagues are really kind. Work-life balance is good, people leave work before 5:30 p.m. Meanwhile every one is pretty passionate about their job. Mars also value team work and external partner a lot. They call it "mutual-benefit".

    Cons

The company office is far from the city. You have to take the bus at around 7 a.m. every day. People are not aggressive, kind of too kind to have the fighting spirit.

    Pros

Great pay, great benefits, leadership doesn't see the big picture of the industry they are in. Liberal T&E and opportunities to travel on the company dime.

    Cons

Lot's of travel. Your competing with a huge competitor and MDNA is the red headed step child.
