    No cohesion among operating companies

    Pros

Well if your lucky to get a bonus then that is one of the best reason to work at Marsh USA inc.

    Cons

Lack of communitcation, leadership, ownership of responsability. Micromanagement... i.e. what did you do yesterday , why did it take you an hour to complete a project that should have only taken u 15 mins. Having supervisors walk around to ensure your at your desk. Losing best talent because no money, yet Marsh had one of the best years in 2009.

    Advice to Management

Pay your people what they are worth and maybe they will stick around longer.

    Pros

some good talent still there.....not for long though

    Cons

    way to many to list

    Advice to Management

back to the drawing board....might want to pay closer attention to keeping colleagues who actually create revenue on the team. Middle Management and tenuered MDs are a joke....everyone on the outside is laughing at you.

    Pros

To get the basis fundamentals of insurance and risk managment.

    Cons

Moral is low, upper management cuts expenses (ie cheaper office supplies, holiday potlucks) but the higher level positions are still allowed to spend enormous amounts of money for traveling. People are promoted not based on merit or hard work but instead of how connected you are in the company. Too many politics and egos that trickles down to the cr's who are left with all the work.

    Advice to Management

I would say hire more innovative fresh minds that challenge the normal functions.

I have been working at Marsh & McLennan Companies full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

In major markets, it is good to have this company on your resume. In smaller markets, companies don't know who we are.

    Cons

Outsourcing many functions to India or moving functions to cheaper parts of the country. This only saves money up front but the loss of knowledge and good talent is more expensive. They need to quit letting people with knowledge leave only to hire replacements that do not know what they are doing. Specifically to Recruiting, managers need to quit accusing and blaming people with false and inaccurate information. If you are looking to Recruit, this is not good environment to work in presently. Heavily overworked and understaffed employees. There is no real advancement for anyone in Recruiting.

I have been working at Marsh & McLennan Companies full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

I'm only speaking of the IT Dept MGTI based in Milton Keynes : This is a really huge company, that DOES have a large number of vacancies, and at times has some really great things to offer any employee. To gain extremely recognizable Corporate experience... this is a good place to be.

    Cons

I'm only speaking of the IT Dept MGTI based in Milton Keynes : The environment is fear based. It's very questioning and demanding of answers when things go wrong, with very little being learned from this. A large number of workplace decisions are based on perception. Rarely do people ask questions about that perception, to make sure, there is actual fact. But, this isn't even something that's hidden... Some managers seem proud of this. Frequently in my early days I was told by my management team "perception is everything"... There is a significant case of "old boys club" going on here. You can not be fantastic at the real meat and gravy of your role, so long as you remember two things... The rule about perception, and being on great terms with certain members of management.

    Advice to Management

Perception IS an excellent tool, but only to decide what questions to ask. It shouldn't be used to judge people, or make decisions.

I have been working at Marsh & McLennan Companies full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Flexible schedules, can decorate your 4 x 5 cube however you like!

    Cons

The pay is dismal - approximately 65% of the going market rate for all positions. CEO is only interested in EPS - no interest in employees. All jobs are currently frozen - no hiring at all. Awful outlook.

    Advice to Management

If you want performance, you have to pay. Times have changed - pay at all other companies is increasing. MMC is known for their lack of compensation - and you will not get any applicants as more employees leave.

    Pros

Decent benefits comparable with market place.

    Cons

Very political environment Senior mgmt in region is incompetent Finger pointing is the name of the game although at the surface people try to be nice, but there is a lot of back stabbing and layig of blames. The buck does not stop at who's accountable as they would like to sell Zero transparency mgmt style Do not believe in staff and staff development and retention.Prefers to look outside rather then develop internally Very underhanded in managing people Fire fighting mode at all times because managment is very shortsighted in what needs to be done to resolve issues in the long term. Senior mgmt expects to know everytime u sneeze. Micro mgmt and Mgmt likes to mangage all the way down to the lowest level resulting in constant firefighting or daily incidents, but conveniently ignore the larger picture for long term sustainability All lot of talk, but dont believe them cos they chage everyday The IT organisation needs to deperate overhaul of its senior mgmt if they ever want to be successful

    Advice to Management

Do not micro manage Tackle to bigger and strategic issues for long term sustainability Develop your people Trust your people Plan
