Pros
Nice people
Great benefits
Varied work available
Cons
Don't expect to be paid well
No raise in 3 years - despite consistent "above expectation" performance
Advice to Senior Management
Develop internal staff instead of constantly looking outside the company for people who were developed by their previous employers.
Pros
The company is one of the few left with a pension plan if you work at least 5 years. Generally, good benefits, but copays seem higher than the case with my prior employer and some of the limits on benefits seem low. Good place, however, if you want to get out the door before 5 PM. Few seem to stay after that in the office. Many positions allow you to work remotely, at least part of the time.
Cons
Lack of loyalty...company has no problem sacrificing employees even if revenues have long been known to be off the mark. Company lacks good systems to track basic details of who and how much business is done with which carrier in some business units.
Pros
Worked for Marsh Inc. during the summer as an intern. Pay was decent and people were nice and friendly. Big firm with growth opportunities if you want to stay in insurance brokerage.
Cons
Work is really boring and not really something you dream about doing. Intellectually dissatisfying and not really a great place to learn because there's nothing TO learn as a risk analyst intern.
Advice to Senior Management
Maybe provide some more responsibilities for the analysts. Found myself sitting around for 3/4ths of the day doing nothing because it was too easy. When I asked for more, they had nothing to give me. Zzz
Pros
Large company with global reach. Good place to start if you want a career in insurance.
Cons
unfortunately, many of the competent senior level managers left the company after the scandal problems of 2005. The company still has not recovered. Now it's filled with managers that are focused on saving their jobs and eliminating any competition internally.
Advice to Senior Management
Senior level managers at Corporate should review the leadership abilities of its division leaders. Are they externally focused in beating the competition or internally focused by eliminating their internal competition.
Pros
Decent benefits comparable with market place.
Cons
Very political environment
Senior mgmt in region is incompetent
Finger pointing is the name of the game although at the surface people try to be nice, but there is a lot of back stabbing and layig of blames. The buck does not stop at who's accountable as they would like to sell
Zero transparency mgmt style
Do not believe in staff and staff development and retention.Prefers to look outside rather then develop internally
Very underhanded in managing people
Fire fighting mode at all times because managment is very shortsighted in what needs to be done to resolve issues in the long term.
Senior mgmt expects to know everytime u sneeze. Micro mgmt and Mgmt likes to mangage all the way down to the lowest level resulting in constant firefighting or daily incidents, but conveniently ignore the larger picture for long term sustainability
All lot of talk, but dont believe them cos they chage everyday
The IT organisation needs to deperate overhaul of its senior mgmt if they ever want to be successful
Advice to Senior Management
Do not micro manage
Tackle to bigger and strategic issues for long term sustainability
Develop your people
Trust your people
Plan
Pros
Marsh & McLennann has provided some great opportunities to work with some very experienced brokers. MMC Clients are very interesting.
Cons
Management lack of recognition that staff are performing. There are some really great employees but the lack of recognition has a negative effect on performance.
Advice to Senior Management
Management to actually interact and talk to staff about concerns. Management to action the concerns of employees versus saying we have listened to your concerns and nothing evolves.
Pros
MMC has great benefits and multiple work locations
Cons
No cohesion among operating companies
Advice to Senior Management
Need to work on standing behind the parent company and set an example for the operating companies
Pros
A market maker/market leader company - best clients in the world - strong and deep talent on the team. Global footprint
Cons
Tough market and business conditions over the past few years - company is stabilized - but been through some difficult changes
Advice to Senior Management
Continue to focus on the client as first priority - ensure front line teams are equipped and well supported to deliver the full value of the firm
Pros
Marsh spares no expense for their employees. Tenure runs very high in the office to prove how much Marsh values their employees. The training process is comprehensive, inclusive, and every detail has been thought out. Staff is committed to a team environment and supporting each other. Resources are always available to help out employees. There is a high degree of professionalism in the office.
Cons
Being a very large company, there are many processes and workflows you have to learn to do your job correctly. Once you learn them it's no big deal. I really can't think of any major cons to working at Marsh.
Advice to Senior Management
Management has been great. I'd love to meet more of the leadership, but I understand this is difficult as Marsh is nationwide.
Pros
Plenty of time off. Telecommute for some after a year. Good travel policy and benefits. Starting salary is competitive.
Cons
Very little advancement opportunities. Muddy bonus policy. Constant change in upper management. Long hours with little reward.
Advice to Senior Management
Stop worrying about organization charts and begin to retain the youth of the company because they were all leaving when I was employed at Marsh.
