I worked at Marshall & Ilsley full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

    Nice people to work with.
    Realistic goals.
Decent pay and incentives BEFORE BMO bought them
    GREAT vacation pay (after BMO)

    Cons

The following cons are because of BMO.

    Bad raises/ very low salaries.
    Micro Management
    Cold calls
Too much emphasis on sales. Not enough emphasis on customer service.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop cold calling customers and STOP making your operations employees (tellers, CSMs...etc) stay after hours to make cold calls. Customer service should be the company's number 1 priority. Not cramming sales down customer's throats. If employees are happy, sales will sore!

M&I- trying to play on the big banks playing field with low grade products and technology

I have been working at Marshall & Ilsley full-time

    Pros

The company pays better then most other banks, tenered employees that have been with the company for 2 years or more seem to be happy (back when it was M&I culture)

    Cons

If you are coming from a bigger bank, stay far far away from this stone-age of a bank. The technology is so far behind and will probably drive you to a point of insanity. The outbound calls that have to be placed on a weekly basis are ridiculous as well.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Spend more money on training employees properly on the "cross selling" method you are trying to achieve, and if you want them to "cross sell" then also upgrade the technology!!! And the calls that are required are going to drive clients to go to competitors to avoid nasty sales calls.

This company pays well but truly does not care about morale and taking care of employees

    Pros

Pays Well, good benefits, you learn a lot about finance as an entry level candidate. They provide free lunch often as an alternative to company activities.

    Cons

Company doesn't care about morale, very metrics based, mandatory overtime, you do not get breaks (except for half hour lunches), and you are required to work weekends no exceptions. Very conservative environment, do not care about providing you with an inspiring workplace. They feed you lunch on their busiest days because they don't want you to leave your desk, and they wheel a cart around to give you fatty snacks instead of encouraging a chance to re-energize and take a walk to get some fresh air.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop micro-managing your employees, start empowering them and encouraging them with positivity. Improve your training and develop more community in the workplace. Stop worrying about calls that are holding and start caring more about building relationships to improve employee retention. Stop encouraging stress and stress eating and start encouraging healthy mindset and healthy employees.

    Pros

    - More financially stable since being purchased by BMO
    - Strong Community Presence
    - Increasing opportunities with merger
    - Strong customer base

    Cons

    - Fate of M&I's position within the BMO organization is in question and there is much uncertainty and unrest
    - Faces decreasing profits like most banks, which will affect employee opportunity and growth

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Provide as much communication and assurance to employees as possible to maintain loyalty

    Pros

Upper management knows what they are doing morally and ethically.

    Cons

A specific manager should not be a manager. No encouragement, negative, and believes in delegating all of her work so she can shop all day! Turn over is high due to poor management in this specific office.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

My advice to upper manager is to pay attention to who you are hiring and listen to what the majority of employees are bringing to you about certain issue.

    Pros

Great opportunity for advancement, excellent benefits, good way to get your foot in the door in the financial field if you plan on making it a career

    Cons

Referral expectations were too high for each month, too much cattiness for such a small office, could be a little more patient while training new employees

I worked at Marshall & Ilsley

    Pros

M&I did a number of things to show their appreciation for their employees each year. Encouraged employees to get involved with events in the community. People looked forward to coming into work each day as their co-workers had become part of their extended families.

    Cons

Since the acquisition, the communication between senior management and those working below is pretty much nonexistent in many areas of the company. There is little to no direction given as to where things are going with their jobs or how the worked is to get completed as the workforce is being continously down sized.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Senior management needs to learn to better communicate what is expected of their direct reports. Something needs to be done to improve the moral in the work place or employees are going to continue to look for employment opportunities outside the company.

    Pros

You get to visit clients at the business site.
    Flexible Schedule.
    Great customers.

    Cons

Used to be great place to work, since merger and sales force came in and new rules to make phone calls is out of control.
They make you call customers like voice to voice like 50 people a week. And whatsoever you MUST schedule 25 appointments a week. If not and even if you are performing it will effect your performance. Too many fake people, and not trusting regional nor senior management.
And even if you are doing great in sales and performing in that field still doesn't matter or even taking care of your customers

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

If you keep doing what you are doing with Salesforce and MiForce you will have lot of disappointing great bankers and employees that will start living which already did happen. You are putting too much pressure on all of us.. Its not a great economy now and people are scared to give a negative comment which you wouldn't like.
This used to be a great place to work and people used to go happy to work here. But somehow it is changing to worse.

I have been working at Marshall & Ilsley

    Pros

    Good life/work balance. Flexible schedule.

    Cons

Really bad communication with Management. Company went thru a merger and Management didn't know how to deal with anything and was blaming employees all the time, letting people go and asking employees to step down. This position also includes a lot of HR duties that you don't receive training for and are expected to know.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Overall, a big communication problem between employees and management. Company needs to focus on positive feedback and possibly building better teams that work together to improve the company.

    Pros

It is a midsize company, so you have the small company feel with the big company benefits. You know everyone in your department and don't feel like a number.

    Cons

They don't keep up with the competition as far as product offering and technology. When I come over from a larger bank, I felt like they were behind the times. Doesn't really affect your ability to do your job, it just makes it a little more difficult.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Spend more money on technology upgrades and continue to look into more product offerings for your customers. You need to offer what your competition offers.
