Current Employee – been working at Maryland Department of Human Resources
Pros – Looks good on your resume when you are ready to escape; job security (even the most incompetent individuals never get fired.
Cons – Management really makes you wonder how they got their jobs - rude, do not divulge information, incompetent. Morale is extremely low. High stress, high volume. No raises & very few advancement opportunities. Everyone looks out for themselves.
Advice to Senior Management – Penalize the employees with poor work ethic & work more to praise the good employees you have. High turnover rate is due to enviroment & not the actual nature of the work.

Former Employee – worked at Maryland Department of Human Resources
Pros – They have an above average benefits package to offer. However, you will pay a very average price for it.
When you start working for the state, you will receive approximately 1 month of paid leave for the year.
When the economy was decent, the organization showed appreciation to it's employees.
Cons – It's hard to articulate these low-lights without coming across as a disgruntled employee.
While working with this organization I witnessed numerous instances of nepotism in regards to promotions.
My particular office with crippled by conspiracies and endless gossip.
The work load was often unbalanced based upon capability rather than responsibility.
Lastly, as with any government gig, seniority takes precedence over merit.
Advice to Senior Management – As daunting as it may be, in order to succeed as a competent department it is necessary to ensure the equality of offices in all counties. i.e., The experiences and regulations in Prince Georges County should mirror those in Allegany County.

Former Employee – worked at Maryland Department of Human Resources
Pros – The good food at Lexington Market. The line staff take their jobs very seriously to serve some of the State's most needy citizens. Also, the ride on public transportation and interactions of some of Baltimore's finest make for great entertainment.
Cons – It is inappropriate to have reductions in force while buying new furniture. The State most invest more money and efforts into recruiting and support foster care parents and child protective services staff. The actual caseload ratios are too high. Staff don't have the correct resources to protect and save children. The Courts must be brought under control and time staff in Court reduced. Lawyers of children must go into the field rather than have workers bring children to court offices for numerous hearing and judicial proceedings.
Advice to Senior Management – Take some fundamentals of management courses and employ what is taught.
