No growth opportunity for support personnel

    Pros

The health benefits are much better than previous companies; on-site cafe; matching gifts; the company closes for the week between Christmas Eve and New Year's. There is a gym on-site. 4% match for 401k. Annual bonus and profit sharing.

    Cons

Minimum to zero advancement potential for support personnel. I have never had a performance review. They are so focused on bringing in good young talent that they make everyone that has been there for years feel undervalued. Support personnel are continuously left out of department meetings, not given any projects, basically made to feel that we are not an important part of the team. Telecommuting policy is not fairly governed.

Lots of red tape for every little idea you may have, legal has to look at everything and takes weeks to respond. IT Help Desk is in bad shape, but they are genuinely pleasant people. It seems to be a lack of direction.

The HQ building has so much empty space (waste of money) and should be moved to Ann Arbor with Cabinetry. According to our last all-employee meeting, layoffs are coming AGAIN. Staff are tired of seeing their co-workers terminated. Morale is pitiful. It feels as if there is a constant threat, and there are a couple director level employees who seem to get energized by firing people. These are the type of people that become executives in the company. The "atmosphere" has changed so much.

It is very heartbreaking as this used to be a wonderful company. I hope that Masco can find its way back, but it doesn't look like it will anytime soon.

In general, I cannot recommend Masco to any interested support level candidates. That said, if you are an executive level employee, you will probably be quite pleased, especially as there are extra perks for execs. I think the extra perks would make up for some of the low morale, etc. that you will face. So, please don't let my review hold you back if you are at that level. It is only for the office workers that the situation is truly dire.

    Pros

Masco is a growing, ever-changing company. They are constantly working to improve the way they do business and to improve the customer service they provide.

    Cons

Because they are in such a growth mode, they often stretch resources beyond their limits.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be more proactive in creating the infrastructure needed to support change and growth. Clean house, if necessary, to get rid of anyone who is not on the same team or who is not able to produce the results necessary for the company's success. Hire people that can build the teams needed to get the job done right! Automate!!! Keep it Simple!!!

    Pros

Continuous improvement supported from the top down, easy to make change happen. No blame culture. Everyone got along well

    Cons

Benefits and pay scale were sub par. If a person received an advanced degree or some type of certification there was no additional compensation

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Evaluate the industry and adjust salaries accordingly

    Pros

Masco used to be a great company and still has a number of good people. Pay and benefits were once highly competitive.

    Cons

The economic slowdown has hit this company hard and barely resembles the same place I worked at. Management used to promote a family atmosphere, that no longer exists.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Pray that the housing market improves and get back to be the kind of company Ray Kennedy used to run.

I was able to travel the country.
Reasonably fun when not bored to tears.
    Great benefits.
Managers were always available by phone.
    Company provided laptop.

    Cons

    LOTS of travel.
    Low pay.
Any time i wasn't traveling, I would be stuck helping a local rep and in only one store at a time... BORING.
Company did not provide phone, even though it was a traveling job.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't force in town time to be spent a one store.

    Masco Corporate Office

Former Employee - Anonymous Employee  in  Detroit, MI
Former Employee - Anonymous Employee in Detroit, MI

    Pros

Masco is fairly good on work life balance. They understand that people generally have a life away from work and are accommodative on time off and professional development.

    Cons

Communication is poor and the "top-down" organizational structure makes it difficult to understand what the strategic vision of the company is. Thus, on a day-to-day basis, its hard to see how your work is relevant, and you don't really feel like you're making a difference or your position is important.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take the time to get to know what lower-level employees are working on and have some dialogue with them on what they can do to help the company.

Great place to work but be prepared for a disconnect between employees and management

Former Employee - Anonymous Employee in Fort Mill, SC

    Pros

Opportunities to learn the overall operation of the industry. Excellent work times 8-5. Human resources does a great job of explaining benifits and is willing to help employees achive their goals. If you have the drive and ambition to succeed run can learn a lot about the business because other employees are willing to help and give you information about the company

    Cons

Communication among employees and management. Employees are not sure of the goals and management doesn't give an explanation of the current goals. No system of measurment for the daily activities within the organization. Management allows products to be back ordered for up to a year and by the time the product is received customer has moved on. Company culture is not strong because of the management/employee disconnect.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get out of the office and on to the floor of the business. Management does not understand the employees and doesn't look for opportunities in the organization and for its customers.

Current Employee - Analyst  in  Taylor, MI
Current Employee - Analyst in Taylor, MI

    Pros

Great people to be around, most of the staff are easing going and laid back particularly outside of the office. Broad range of staff as well, which gives many different viewpoints. Many get a laptop for work. Staff is not competitive with each other, and are striving to work well and develop the business.

Salary is okay, not wholly satisfied. Bonuses and raises are based primarily on performance, but during the downturn who knows. Great cafeteria, the food and staff are really nice. Masco also offers a full gym with several treadmills, bikes ellipticals, free weights, and machines. There is an on-site certified trainer from 8:30-5. Also, offers work out classes.

    Cons

Many cuts have been made and job security is a little frightful. There is little feedback or communication on individual performance. It would be nice if there were career mentors available. Tasks seem to be limited to the scope of management, there is little room for individual innovation or thinking. Its definitely a top down approach with a new flavor of the month.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Considering the economy and being centered in housing, I don't think there is much more they could be doing.
