Pros
Financially strong company. More job security
Cons
No career growth opportunities or advancement
Advice to Senior Management
Provide way of giving anonymous feedback to management. Some groups exist in fear. In some cases, post-engagement survey action only worsened morale because senior management not interested in really engaging. It's all about the "show".
Pros
Is a commission only sales position so you do enjoy the benefits associated with a position like this.
--Make your own schedule
--Little involvement from Management
--If you sell, your income potential is unlimited
Cons
The entire industry tries to disguise the true nature of the position. You are there for one reason, that reason is to sell life insurance policies. Yet, that's never said in any of your interviews, you are told you are there to "help" clients, you are able to sell many products, and so on. While there is some true to those things. Your primary and secondary responsibility is to sell life insurance policies. If you sell, your experience will be awesome. If you do not, not so much.
Advice to Senior Management
Be honest with your recruits and your retention rate will increase. Less of them will be disappointed once they get started.
Pros
Ok benefits and pay was ok if you could make the sale on your own with little help from management
Cons
they test your morals every day and want you to call your friends and family to try and sell them with out really seeing what they need or supplying you with any leads, good luck if you want to succeed here and are new to the game you better have a lot of friends and family willing to spend lots of money.
Advice to Senior Management
don't favor people and give them cases that will make a lot of money and leave out other to fend for themselves
Pros
Good solid company, been around a long time
Cons
Health Insurance has been a nightmare, Mass changed to Huge Deductables and after meeting our deductable, they cancelled our Cobra Insurance. Guess they really don't want their employees or former employees to use the insurance. Called Mass about issues with their Cobra administrative company and was blown off. If this is how they treat their policy holders when they have a problem, good luck.
Advice to Senior Management
Treat your former employees better. Myself, family and friends are still policy holders, but probably not for long.
Pros
Unlimited potential with a solid company behind you. Definitely a leader in many ways in the life insurance industry, with great home office support.
Cons
No salary and full commission. Huge differences in organizational culture depending on what local Agency you work through because the General Agent's have tremendous flexibility on how to run things.
Advice to Senior Management
Increase talent development and work on increasing retention rates. The communication on the local level is often quite poor within the Agency and is a major source of frustration among both new org and veterans.
Pros
Unlimited income opportunity with residual income from sales which can pay out over ten years.
One of the best overall product menus in the business, life insurance, disability insurance, group health, executive benefits plans, stocks and funds. MassMutual owns Oppenheimer Funds and uses MFS Funds which invesnted the mutual fund and was rated top overall fund family by Lipper for 2010.
The training is excellent. Often there are redundant classes, which you may opt out of, but for the business it's a great advantage to be able to schedule your appointment times and still get training.
The staff and support personnel are very experienced and can help you move your cases along.
Cons
The business is a sink or swim deal. You have to make enough cases the first three years to stay on your contract and there is no income if you don't sell product.
You will be expected / required to work some long days.
Advice to Senior Management
The experience I have had with this group is excellent. I can recommend highly the entire group as people who are great to work with.
Pros
Most people are very personable. Great benefits, including small things like dry cleaning, shoe and clothing repair on site. Overall very good people.
Cons
Incentives need to be changed so that people are more willing to work together (be helpful) across areas. Employees are very helpful to their boss and immediate team, but it is hard to work people in other areas. There is a "silo" mentality.
Even within one's area, people are very political.

Pros
Great management (depends on location). Good environment for joint work.
Cons
Commission Based -Selling. Lots of agents.
Pros
Good Benefits. Good Bonus and good balance between work and home
Cons
Too political. Poor compensation and health benefits
Advice to Senior Management
Encourage a non-political work environment
Pros
Helps one develops immense self motivation due to the high pressure nature of the business. Encourages professional networking. Will help hone communication and influencing skills.
Cons
Management should spend more 1 on 1 time on teaching representatives concepts in financial planning, placing less emphasis in the process of making the sale to keep employee satisfaction high.
Advice to Senior Management
Develop stronger relationships with your reps even with the high turnover rate. Put into place advisor training programs that are more in depth and less surface level. This may help motivate more advisors to stay in the industry with this company.
