Great for starting out in the insurance and investment industry

Financial Services Representative (Former Employee)
Glen Allen, VA

I worked at MassMutual full-time for more than a year

ProsProvided knowledge about mainly insurance but also investment prodcuts. Through role play, cold calling and cold walking (businessses) you develop good sales and people experience.

ConsThe company wants you to "push" there products and services which is not always right for the customer. The annuities they have are terrible and the insurance is expensive in some cases. They mass hire almost anyone it seems like. No salary and you do pa to work there.

Advice to Senior ManagementI knew what I was getting into when I signed on and had no problem with it. Tell people honestly what they can expect to make in the first year. Let them know there is a lot of role play and interactive training involved as well as cold calling.

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company

Really lame

Internal Auditor (Former Employee)
Springfield, MA

I worked at MassMutual full-time for more than a year

ProsCafeteria is ok, benefits are ok.

ConsThis is the most boring place in the world in the middle of no man's land Springfield. It has a weird culture. Some really like it, some don't. I think it is better than Travelers through as I worked there for 4 years.

Advice to Senior ManagementMove the office location out of Springfield.

Not what I expected. Nine months, spent a lot of money obtaining licensing, was not reimbursed or paid while at company.

Sales Representative (Former Employee)
Raleigh, NC

I worked at MassMutual full-time for less than a year

ProsExcellent products, and (as stated in the interview) high commissions on sales. Internal website is very informative, although excessive, and might confuse less tech savvy individuals.

ConsPoor business structure, new employees (in my view) are taken advantage of, and not given proper training to become successful. New employees are expected to build their own book of business without leads, or contributed advertising dollars from management. My experience, I spent thousands of dollars without earning a penny. Company wants your contacts, will sign them to product, and hopefully you will quit, so that they can keep your residual commissions.

Advice to Senior ManagementDevelop your talent when they come in the door. Time and money spent in the front end will create revenue for you, and a dedicated employee. Build a solid two week training course, instead of one or two hours a week, spread out over the course of months.

If it's right for you, it's great

Financial Representative (Former Employee)
Beverly Hills, CA

I worked at MassMutual full-time for more than a year

ProsAccess to experts who can assist you along the way.

ConsCommission only, and if you understand the nature of the business, you know that it's very difficult to have a consistent regular income stream, thus long term planning is difficult.

Advice to Senior ManagementProvide an initial salary for those who just started and are meeting sales expectations.
