    I worked at MassMutual full-time

    Pros

It is a job, that doesn't pay by debit card yet!!!!

    Cons

If your are not in senior management, you do not matter. You will do as you are told, regardless of your experience, otherwise you will be sent on your way. Your job will be segmented, expect to be replaced quickly if you do not fall in line with their BIG DATA ways. The only thing that matters is cash flow, so much so that one senior vp even jokes that she named her dog "cash flow", many believe it!!!!!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Expect to fail, your yes men and women will never tell you when you are wrong. You will get what you deserve as you fail in the businesses you buy your way into.

    I worked at MassMutual

    Pros

Mass Mutual of Silicon Valley is a good place to get you feet wet in the sales world. They have a great training program

    Cons

They try to convince you that success relies in making friends and family become your clients.

I worked at MassMutual full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

There are some good people and the cafeteria is decent.

    Cons

Time off policy, compensation, environment, culture. There is no work/life balance. Success is defined by the number of days and hours worked, rather that skill and ability. The MMWay office environment does not offer even the slightest amount of privacy, which makes it difficult to have quiet place to focus on your work. Working from home is frowned upon.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Move from vacation, personal days, and sick time to a PTO bank. The current system is old school and encourages employees to call out "sick". Listen to your employees. Morale is low and management is out of touch. The message from the front line is so sanitized by the time it reaches senior management that it no longer reflects reality.

I have been working at MassMutual full-time

    Pros

    Decent benefits and bonus potential

    Cons

Everything else - antiquainted management, processes and overall business mentality

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Step outside the gates of massmutual to see what the rest of the world is doing, and doing right!

I worked at MassMutual full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Cafeteria is ok, benefits are ok.

    Cons

This is the most boring place in the world in the middle of no man's land Springfield. It has a weird culture. Some really like it, some don't. I think it is better than Travelers through as I worked there for 4 years.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Move the office location out of Springfield.

Not what I expected. Nine months, spent a lot of money obtaining licensing, was not reimbursed or paid while at company.

I worked at MassMutual full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Excellent products, and (as stated in the interview) high commissions on sales. Internal website is very informative, although excessive, and might confuse less tech savvy individuals.

    Cons

Poor business structure, new employees (in my view) are taken advantage of, and not given proper training to become successful. New employees are expected to build their own book of business without leads, or contributed advertising dollars from management. My experience, I spent thousands of dollars without earning a penny. Company wants your contacts, will sign them to product, and hopefully you will quit, so that they can keep your residual commissions.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Develop your talent when they come in the door. Time and money spent in the front end will create revenue for you, and a dedicated employee. Build a solid two week training course, instead of one or two hours a week, spread out over the course of months.

I have been working at MassMutual full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Good people at the lower levels, support each other, despite unhealthy environment

    Cons

Leadership is inept, don't care, provide lip service, all awards and recognition for supporting work/family balance and working women is just for show. Politically charged, cut throat and twisted. If you're not "in favor," you're screwed. And a history of strong performance and proven track record means nothing if you get on insurance division leaders bad side.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Dig deeper into what's going on under the covers. Instead of what your senior leaders are reporting. It's all spin.

    Fine for tenured brokers

I have been working at MassMutual full-time for less than a year

    Pros

    Great office
Product line is comprehensive and high quality
    Technology is good
Corporate support is very, very good.

    Cons

Management tends to pay attention to new reps clients and not new reps.
Franchises like to veer away from the company best practices.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Focus on developing new talent instead of going after low hanging fruit. Sure it's sales, but that shouldn't preclude leadership.

I have been working at MassMutual full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

friendly co-workers help make a poor working environment bearable.

    Cons

Very poor leadership and a poor work/life balance. Culture is old school and generally against work from home arrangements. Tendency to be understaffed and excessive overtime is the norm. Not an open culture. Upper level management/executives are out of touch and not open to employee input for improving a very poor work environment.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

what you are doing right now isn't working. when you ask employees for input on your many surveys actually listen to what is being said.

I have been working at MassMutual full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Very good office staff; nice offices; quality products; ease of doing business; benefits

    Cons

upper management not involved with day to day operations and not approachable or gets defensive; lower management robotic with their teachings; no help generating sales and no financial support to get started; appears that established agents have succeeded off the backs of people who quit within first year or two as their first sales are low relative to their income of residuals; worst case of good ol'e boy network you can imagine; unpleasant senior agents; we are asked to write in to "Best Places to Work in VA" so we can win; very unfavorable to women agents

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

get in touch with agents coming along and ask what they need today not preach what used to be done 20 years ago; come off some of the money you all make and help new people get a good footing; don't make it so obvious what senior agents earn as it is very disheartening to see favoritism be rewarded
