The Public sector versus the private sector

    Nurse Manager (Former Employee)
    Boston, MA

ProsThe best reasons to work in the public sector are job security and benefits. The organizations human values are generally in the right place, but due to the way funding is determined, you're always working with little of nothing. Promotions are available for anyone with some initiative, but the money generally caps out fairly early.

ConsThe pay scale is generally lower than the private sector for upper echelon positions , but higher than the private sector at the lowest levels, where its better than the private sector.

Advice to Senior ManagementYou have an opportunity to do good work, but you will have to struggle against inertia and a lack of capital to get it done. Management pay is adequate, but it has a low cap.

you get out what you put in, ignore co workers who have been in the state system too long and do not work/work hard

    Recreation Therapist (Current Employee)
    Tewksbury, MA

Proseasy to get time off when needed
    core group of good co-workers
if you are willing to work hard and make things happen you are given freedom to do so

Consmany have "state worker" attitude, protected by union
hard work is not rewarded, and is discouraged by people who had been there too long

Advice to Senior Managementhigher up management is good, the lower level direct supervisors of individual departments not great

The work is extremely relevant and it's not uncommon to see what your working on displayed on the nightly news.

ProsThe work is extremely relevant and it's not uncommon to see what your working on displayed on the nightly news.

ConsIt's very political, probably more than needs to be for the state health department. It's often difficult to understand the mast plan.

ProsGenerally nice people and supportive environment. Much of the work is interesting. You help people and they often (not always) appreciate it. Good pay for what you do. Work is not stressful.

ConsLimited hours, little opportunity to advance.

Advice to Senior ManagementStop wasting money on patronage jobs and hire the workers you need!

It's a good idea to go in with a five year plan

    Epidemiologist (Current Employee)
    Boston, MA

ProsThe Department of Public Health is a good place to start working if you are interested in community education related activities. It exposes you to the public on a regular basis and creates a substantial base for ones career.

ConsThe type of work done as an epidemiologist varies across bureaus, but the academic epidemiology one learns in class is not used on a regular basis. So, if you are interested in designing studies and applying epidemiological methods, an academic setting may be a bit more suitable.

Advice to Senior ManagementI believe the leadership has developed a wonderful culture for their employees. However, I believe the should focus on identifying ways of regularly challenging their staff.

good place but difficult outlook when government budget is tight

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
    Boston, MA

ProsPeople are generally passionate about health care issues and have a general like-mindedness about their work. Won't have to deal with politics within the organization as much as other work settings.

ConsWork environment is far from impressive - standard cubicles in older buildings and a few people who don't know what professionalism is can make it seem hostile. Though it doesn't happen frequently nor is it the norm that behavior is "out-of-control" but management doesn't seem to care or do anything about these issues such as - 1) personal arguments on the phone leading to yelling and cursing to the extent everyone can hear something is happening 2) blatant youtube viewing around someone's cubicle with uncontrollable laughter...you might be able to guess what's "acceptable" and what's not...

Advice to Senior Managementsenior management does a good job communicating issues throughout the department and divisions...

FUN and POLITICAL JOBS AT MDPH

    Epidemiologist (Current Employee)
    Boston, MA

ProsGreat people work at DPH. Flexible schedule and great benefits. Healthcare costs are low compared to other companies in the for profit world. Public health is an interesting field to be a part of as everyday there is something different and interesting to keep your attention. There are many focus areas in public health (asthma, environmental health, health disparities, policy, and occupational health) that allow a person to pick and choose what he or she would want to work with. After receiving a public health degree it is easy to find a job based on the number of people DPH hires for its different program areas.

ConsNo money to attend conferences or support to write papers or do research. A new secretary means new focus and new direction with every governor. The politics around budgets and who receives the $$$$$ is crazy at times.

Advice to Senior ManagementListen to your employees - provide training and educational support.
