I have been working at Massachusetts Department of Transportation full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Great group of people to work with. Challenging and varying projects. With tight budgets one is given the opportunity to work on all types of projects, including the opportunity to work on huge state projects that would normally be given to a senior level person.

    Cons

Dealing with the politics can be frustrating.

I worked at Massachusetts Department of Transportation as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

good people, decent compensation for no experience. They will hire you immediately after an internship basically if you have a pulse and it is a great and secure career path

    Cons

Poorly managed internship. Gained little value and learned very little.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

More training, office culture was interesting... Prepare for interns next time.

    Pros

There is security and stability when working at the state government level. You know what you will be doing and you will know how to do it. Your job will likely not be difficult.

    Cons

You might not be that enthusiastic with the work all the time. Bureaucracy and politics can play a large part of not getting something accomplished in a timely manner.

Behind the times, still too political, allocates everyone at 200%

I have been working at Massachusetts Department of Transportation

    Pros

Steady paycheck, good set of holidays, high visibility in the workplace. Centrally located within the downtown Boston area. Pre-tax discount for T passes.

    Cons

Pay not comparable to other organizations, lack of communication and morale, not enough delegation and too much allocation per person. Everyone walks on eggshells, no flexibility for work life balance. The work gets done based on how much someone bangs their fist on their desk or shouts the loudest.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Your workers are people with lives. They can also only handle so much, allow those in middle management to delegate and let them MANAGE vs. making them the go-to person for everything. Pay them a decent salary, and you'll stop wondering why people are jumping ship left and right.

Not bad for a government job, but definitely worse than the private sector.

I have been working at Massachusetts Department of Transportation

    Pros

Good starting salary, great health insurance. Job security is second to none. MHD has 6 offices around the state, so you can transfer to a more convenient location.

    Cons

Minimal time off (except sick time), no other employer paid benefits beyond health insurance. No 401k/457 company match, no dental insurance, you pay full price of life insurance and disability insurance. You are required to pay union dues and contribute to the state pension fund (combined 11% of gross salary). Many of the other employees are unqualified or simply incompetent. There is no reward for doing good work. Work schedule is extremely rigid -- all employees are on a shift schedule with no flex or comp time.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Treat your employees like human beings. Promote (and respect) the good employees, regardless of political pressures and affiliations.

Good job to have considering pay, however the managers need to become more efficient.

I worked at Massachusetts Department of Transportation

    Pros

Decent pay for a seasonal job.

    Cons

Hours are bad no matter what shift you get and since the Mass DOT took over the Turnpike, they always screw up paychecks and you do not receive pay again until fighting with them.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Make your system more efficient and get rid of personnel that are dead weight.
