Great learning experience for an intern

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsSurrounded by dedicated, knowledgeable colleagues, it is a wonderful place to learn.

ConsThe environment can be intense at times, especially for an intern. Because it is such a large hospital, it can be intimidating and difficult to learn the systems and how to navigate the hospital.

ProsLots of Researchers and labs to work in. Can learn a lot if you find a great mentor.

ConsMost of the positions for the students will be unpaid and hence its better to keep that in my mind before starting to apply.

Hours are hectic, but great experience

    Research Technician II (Current Employee)
    Boston, MA

ProsYou're always surrounded by intelligent people in the research buildings, so you learn a lot simply by absorbing conversations around you. Lots of collaboration goes on between labs, so there are a lot of resources at your disposal to help you learn new skills. Also being published on a paper or two never hurts your resume.

ConsHours extend into evenings/weekends depending on your experiments and projects and the schedule can be really irregular.

Advice to Senior ManagementMake everyone feel that they are integral to the lab, even if they are a tech.

    Great entry level job!

    Patient Services Coordinator (Current Employee)

    - Laid back work environment
    - Decent benefits
    - Excellent work/life balance

Cons- Not a lot of growth to move up as an admin
    - Pay is NOT COMPETITIVE! Pay is measured by years of experience and department, degrees are not factored in compensation.

Advice to Senior ManagementEmployees should have access to all professional development training courses, regardless of position.

Committees for animal research largely abuse of their power

    Postdoctoral Research Fellow (Current Employee)

ProsGreat things happens here, you can do whatever you believe you need to, because you'll always find the instrument you need and the latest cutting edge machine

ConsThe Subcommittee on Research Animal Care (SRAC) serves as the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) for MGH. SRAC largely abuses of their powers. Having an animal protocol approved or renewed takes forever (6-12 months). Committee members do not have the competence to judge an animal protocols. they ask you silly questions on your science. Still, if you want to do your experiments, you have to put apart your self esteem and be ready to lose plenty of time after their unnecessary bureaucracy.

Advice to Senior ManagementThe final perception is by far leaning toward excess concern with procedural correctness, at the expense of researchers' needs.

Friendly staff, good networking and collaborative efforts for researchers but offers poor incentives.

ProsFor postdocotral fellows, this is a good place to expand your network. The quality of sceince is excellent.

ConsBenefits for basic research scientist are limited.

Advice to Senior ManagementAnnual reviews are good but sometimes do not offer the opportunity to the lower level enployees to review manager properly.
