I have been working at Massachusetts General Hospital

    Pros

Gained experience observing engineers and technicians during meetings and discussions

    Cons

few hours, little pay, and the only tasks I was asked to perform were administration/secretarial related.

    Pros

Decent benefits, good atmosphere, cutting edge science and healthcare

    Cons

Salaries are low, partners a giant bureaucracy, attitude is you should be grateful to work there

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Company values are great but the bureaucratic bloat results in slow turnarounds and organizational inflexibility

I have been working at Massachusetts General Hospital full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Vibrant and stimulating work environment, vicinity with top-notch laboratories and access to virtually any technology. Plenty of growth opportunities in science. Nice people.

    Cons

In my Division, there is little recognition of merit. Everybody becomes Instructor after 5 years of postdoctoral work - totally independently on the number and quality of published papers. Little support during transition to independency. No help on research project - no tech or student assigned to any of us, which means little opportunity of honing supervision skills and slow-paced research. Bad salaries - after 6 years of service I have the NIH equivalent of a 3 year postdoc.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Uniform compensation to NIH standards. Take seriously any request for help in research.

I have been working at Massachusetts General Hospital part-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Good benefits, great job (for me), schedluling is a breeze when you are only part time.

    Cons

Some nurses are no longer effective, some "eat their young", That mentality should've stopped long ago.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be a better advocate for your nurses. Many managers are "against" nurses not backing them when they should.

I worked at Massachusetts General Hospital full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Supportive staff. Everyone seems to encourage higher education and trainings. Benefits are good, but tough to break out of department.

    Cons

Salary not great since the focus is on benefits. You need to work at least 3 years before becoming vested in the company so it's better if you plan to stay within the Partners network.

I worked at Massachusetts General Hospital as an intern

    Pros

As an intern, I was challenged to see the ways "the thread of compassion" is strung between all facets of the hospital. I was surrounded by caring managers who wanted me to benefit and learn more than the amount of work I would be doing for them. They genuinely cared about my well-being and I was happily surrounded by intelligent coworkers.

    Cons

    This internship unfortunately was unpaid.

I worked at Massachusetts General Hospital full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

I worked at MGH as a pediatric oncology social worker, and the support that I received from supervision and staff members was some of the best I've ever received.

    Cons

One difficult think about MGH is that the competition for positions is so high that the time off can sometimes be very minimal.
