The MasterCard IPS group is a sweat shop full of incompetent management

Senior Software Engineer (Current Employee)
Saint Louis, MO

I have been working at MasterCard

ProsThere is MCU, MasterCard University, where you can learn about processing and the payments industry. There are some competent and committed people with whom to work. The facilities are OK, with the big gym and decent dining hall.

ConsThe benefits are not that great, especially the medican and dental.
There is a group of folks at MasterCard who have been there for 10 years or more. That is an elitist club. They do very little work and put the onus of all the real work onto the new employees. These employees don't get the pension (like the ol' timers still get), don't get the recognition, and get very little thanks and praise. In the IPS group, especially, much of the real work is done by outsourcing it to onshore and offshore contractors.

Advice to Senior ManagementGet some fresh management in there. Try to break up the elitist club of the folks who have been at MC for a long time. Get rid of Lotus Notes for goodness sake, and replace it with Microsoft Outlook.

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at MasterCard

ProsIf you like a challenge, go for it.

ConsBureaucratic culture concerned more about process in order to achieve an appearance of competency and efficiency. Creativity and productivity are not valued.

Sweat shop

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at MasterCard

ProsThe pay and benefits are excellent. Additionally the Company promotes education and career development classes. In a down economy, MasterCard's stock is outperforming the market and there are no wage freezes or salary cuts.

ConsDepending upon your individual department's management, the working environment could be hell. Long hours, lack of recogntion, top heavy structure and incompetence at the top. Be prepared to work 14 hour days, at least six days a week, and face time is very important. Meetings take your entire day, so your work must be done after 5PM.

Advice to Senior ManagementClean house. Replace with competent people who work smarter, not harder. Push for a work-life balance. Burnt out employees cannot perform properly. Stop hiring consultants that have no ties to the business.

Walking the tightrope of success....or failure?

Business Leader (Current Employee)
Purchase, NY

I have been working at MasterCard

ProsVery good work life balance. Also, manaement practices, knowledge sharing and career advancement are dependant upon the area in which you are employed, as there is not a consistant benchmark that is enforced throughout the organization.

ConsThe lack of consistancy as described avbove, also the lack of support by HR in dealing with managers that create issues as a result of their lack of competency.

Advice to Senior ManagementBegin to understand the worth of your workforce. There is a distinct lack of effective management training, and no repercussions for not behaving in an appropriate manner towards employees. Belittling, disrespect and cursing are practiced far too often as a management style, and will never lead to the sustained results you seek.

MasterCard's Hiring and Promotion Practices

Group Head (Current Employee)
Purchase, NY

I have been working at MasterCard

ProsMasterCard is truly a global company and their bottom line benefits from a growing consumer preference to use plastic versus checks and cash to pay for goods and services.

ConsMasterCard during and post IPO has taken a 180 on performance based promotions and explicitly sanctions reverse discrimination policies. The HR department is extremely corrupt and employs bully tactics to achieve their politically motivated objectives.

Advice to Senior ManagementTo the senior management team - Stop Promoting Exclusionary Groups. You should be running and leading a business to the benefit of shareholders, and not running a political campaign. Bob, 3-4 of your senior HR officers are actively trying to dilute talent and subvert your business goals - wake up!!

Don't trust MasterCard! No matter how well your performance reviews are, they will find a way to get rid of you.

Senior Business Leader (Current Employee)

I have been working at MasterCard

ProsMasterCard is a growing company and continues to make double digit growth.

ConsMasterCard likes to terminate people in small pockets so they do not get their name in the paper. They do not like to get negative press. Senior Management team not very strong.

Advice to Senior ManagementExecutive Management needs to talk with their employee a lot more than they are doing. Morale has been poor since July 2008.

This company is a good company. Their new shared services is a nightmare

Accounts Payable Temp (Current Employee)
O'Fallon, MO

I have been working at MasterCard full-time

ProsThe company pays better than market to their employees. The time off policy is very generous. The O
Fallon building has many perks for the employee.

ConsThe culture and the actual environment are totally different. MasterCard HR tries to promote work/life balance. Putting the employees first. The actuality is long hours, overworked staff, and a hostile work environment. Management is worried about covering themselves and showing up others so they look good with no regard to the result of the dept. or other employees trying to do their best.

Advice to Senior ManagementReview the business leader and above in the GBSC transaction services and replace with competent leadership.

Good workplace for the enterprising

Technical Consultant (Current Employee)
Saint Louis, MO

I have been working at MasterCard full-time for more than 8 years

ProsWhat you learn is only limited by your drive to learn. Flexible schedules are a perk. Benefits are competitive. Strong technology focus on the core network enables value added products to be developed.

ConsBureaucracy in middle management inhibits productivity. Need to create better alignment to vision communicated by executive leadership. Software Development culture not quite state of the art - no vision in procuring the right tools to do the job.

Advice to Senior ManagementHire better talent and create an environment where they succeed. Stop the cover your ass culture.

CEO is visionary and likeable

Software Engineer (Current Employee)
Dublin, Dublin (Ireland)

I have been working at MasterCard full-time for more than 3 years

ProsWork life balance
Great experience
Passionate employees

ConsNo salary negotiations for lateral moves
Salary increments are between 1 and 4%
No career progression
Poor management training and support for new management. Managers lack leadership skills, managers lack the balls to fight for what is right.

Advice to Senior ManagementThe company would lose ambitious (tomorrow leaders) if they do not harness and promote employees.
Meeting or surpassing expectations should be rewarded financially and with the opportunity of promotions.
